Solution for AOL & OS X FTP authentication problems (or: AdamKB writes an FTP FAQ)

Mike Stockman write to me on Wednesday to let me know that he had found a way around the glitch that prevents users of AOL for Mac OS X from being proprly authenticated to use external FTP clients with AOL's web/FTP space.

Subject: AdamKB Feedback

Hi, Adam... I ran across a problem using third-party FTP clients over a non-AOL connection to get to My FTP Space. I finally figured out a solution -- add a static route to members.aol.com that passes through the AOL PPP connection instead of the default gateway.

I don't have a useful place to post this, and since you're the first person I think of when I'm looking for a clearinghouse of AOL information, I figured I'd send this to you for dissemination wherever you think it's useful.

If this is obvious, sorry... I've never found this or any other solution over a number of years of searching.

...

Well, it wasn't obvious -- not to me. Didn't even occur to me that a solution like this was possible.

I did a litttle playing around, and confirmed his discovery. This has been a minor annoyance of mine ever since I made the switch to OS X, and I've occasionally posted about it to Mac-related message boards.

Now, unfortunately, the fix is fairly technical, and will probably scare most folks away. But it does work, and sure is of help to me.

And, of course, me being the overachiever I am, I had to write a whole AOL & FTP Guide/FAQ just so I could document Mike's fix in a one-line note (rather than just blog about it here). I banged this out in a little less than an hour, and it represents a cross-section of my knowledge of the various FTP-related topics.

Feedback is welcome.
