Embedded Video Player Trouble? Plus, Profile Search Improvements!

Hi folks -- hope you all had a good weekend. Here are a few updates on some stuff going on around the AIM Pages way:

* Problems With Embedded Flash Video for Firefox Users: This one is kind of a switch from the norm -- users of the Firefox browser will find that they're having problems trying to play video from embedded players that are contained in the code snippet module. (Users of the Internet Explorer browser are unaffected.)

It looks like there's a problem with the code where you can see the controls of any given embedded Flash video player that's in a code snippet module (like your standard YouTube or UnCut Video player), but the controls are "behind" an invisible layer, which means you can't click the Play button to play the video.

So, the video loads, but you can't play it. Annoying.

Until we get a fix in, however, there is a workaround for Firefox users:

1. Click with your mouse somewhere in the embedded Flash video player.

2. Hit the Tab key. You should see an area highlight with a colored box. That's a clickable hotspot. Keep hitting the Tab key until the Play button highlights:

In my screenshot, the Pause button is highlighted, since it was better than showing a blank screen.

3. When the Play button is highlighted, hit the Space bar or Enter key. Either one will act like a mouse click on the highlighted hotspot.

Incidentally, you can use the tabbing around trick to find the clickable areas in a lot of Flash thingies (including the Easter Eggs hidden in Strong Bad e-mails). It also works in certain cases where style sheet problems keep you from clicking something that should be clickable (or might even be hidden from view -- as you tab around, check the status bar at the bottom of your browser to see what's happening.).

Incidentally, the screenshot above was taken from the Ford Edge profile, which was where we first found the problem. I'm not highlighting their profile just because they're a commerce partner. Oh, wait -- I am.

* Enhanced Profile Search: DrDzoe (another Joe), who you may know because he leaves a lot of comments in peoples' profiles, tells us that we're should be getting a much-improved Profile Search tomorrow. The front-end will look the same, but the back-end (where all the magic happens), will be radically improved.

Since the launch of AIM Pages a few months back, profile search has been kind of a problem. We've made some improvements along the way, but we really needed to overhaul it. That's what this version will do.

And, Joe tells us, the really cool thing is that the new Profile Search will also be able to index the dynamic content on the page.

In most of our profiles, the static content (which is stuff that usually gets indexed by search engines) is the HTML that makes up the framework.  The dynamic content of the modules -- which includes comments and feeds -- is where most of the cool profile stuff happens.

The testing along the way has been really promising, but the proof will be in the pudding, so play around with the profile search tomorrow and let us know what you think.

Thanks -- Joe
