Adding "My Photo" in Quick Edit Mode

Hi folks -- so, adding basic info to your profile was pretty simple -- just check a bunch of boxes and hit "Save Changes" and you're done.

Adding your photo to your profile in Quick Edit mode is just as easy. And you got to have a photo in your profile, right? I mean, it's not a technical requirement or anything, but a profile without a photo just lacks something.

For example, if you don't upload a photo, not only will you have a big spot of lameness in the left column of your profile, but if you're someone's buddy, you'll just be a grey silhouette in their Buddy Gallery.

So, if you don't want to put your face up, try a picture of something that people associate with you, or a photo that represents an interest of yours. The possiblities are endless (well, please avoid copyrighted or objectionable material).

Here's the My Photo section you'll see after you've signed in to Quick Edit mode (I'm using my ReadyAIMJoe profile, the one I set up so I could mess around in Quick Edit mode, as an example):

Adding or Editing the My Photo section of AIM Pages' Quick Edit Mode

It's pretty simple; here are the three steps (well, I guess there should be a "Step 0: Have a photo you want to use."):
  1. Click the "Browse" button and choose the photo you want to use from your computer. You can use three photo formats: GIF (non-animated, sorry), JPEG or PNG files.

  2. Click the "Preview" button. You have to do this -- it will show you the photo as it's going to be published. Two things to remember:

    * The max displayed size is 200x200 pixels, so photos bigger than that will be automatically resized.

    * Photos that aren't square won't be cropped, stretched or squished, but they won't fill up all the available space. Preview will show you what the photo will look like when it's live.

  3. Click "Save Changes" to publish your updated profile.
That's it; photo added. (If you like, you can type in a title for your My Photo module, but you can skip that if you want.)

Tips on Choosing a Good Photo:

* As I said, the max size of your profile photo is 200x200 pixels. If you want total control on how your photo looks in your profile (so it doesn't get resized), use a source photo that's a max of 200x200:

Also keep in mind that smaller thumbnail versions of your photo will be automatically generated for use in several places in AIM Pages, including other people's Buddy Galleries, as well as Profile Search results:

And an even smaller photo will be seen when you leave comments, and in that tiny pic at the top of your profile:

So try to pick a photo that will look good even at small sizes. For example, if you use a picture of yourself, try to get a relatively close crop of your face.

* Be square. Again, AIM Pages won't crop, squish or stretch a photo that isn't square, but the photo won't fill up all the available space and will therefore display smaller than it could.

If you use a photo that's square, or close to square, you'll be able to squeeze out every available pixel to display.

Anyway, that's how you add your photo to your My Profile area in Quick Edit mode. You can also add photos to your Profile's My Pictures area, as well as by using use other kinds of photo modules (like RockYou or WooHoo slideshows) in the Custom HTML section of your profile, but those will be topics for another day.

Incidentally, for a full overview of Quick Edit mode, check out the Quick Edit Mode section in the AIM Pages FAQ. Also, see the Welcome to AIM Pages walkthrough -- they're both pretty good (Which is no surprise -- after all, I had nothing to do with writing them.)

Have fun, play around with your profiles and leave me a comment with a link to your profile if you want to show off your photos.

Thanks -- Joe
