How to Display a Feed (Like, From Your Blog) in Your Profile

So here's a slightly more advanced topic. It's for you folks who already have blogs, and want to show off your latest blog entries in your AIM Pages profile, like I did in my ReadyAIMJoe profile:

Click a link to see that blog entry. Tip: Hover over a blog entry title with your mouse, and it will show a summary of that entry.

Just about all blogs have feeds, which are like broadcasts of the blog's content. If you subscribe to a blog's feed using a feed reader, you can organize and read a whole bunch of feeds from different places -- blogs, news sites, eBay auctions, photo streams, whatever -- together. It's very convenient.

What we're going to do is display a blog's feed (let's assume it's yours) in your profile, so that people who visit your profile see the headlines and summaries of your most recent blog entries.

It's real easy -- all you need is:(Here's the direct link to the Feed Module and Multi-Feed Module in the Module Gallery; you can click "Add to Page," and skip ahead.)

To add the Feed Module to your profile:
  1. Sign in to your profile, then hit the Edit Page button in the upper right of the page. This will put you in Quick Edit Mode.
  2. In the left column, click the link that says "Edit your page in Advanced Edit Mode."
  3. The Advanced Edit Mode bar will show up. Click "Add Modules:"

  4. The module bar will open. Choose the category "Rich Text & Feeds", then with your mouse, click and drag the feed module down lower into your page:

  5. As you drag, you'll see a ghostly outline of the feed module, and a blue line that shows you where the module will land when you let go of your mouse:

  6. Drop the module in your profile, then click the "Update" button:

  7. This is where you pick a feed. You can click "Browse the Feed Directory" to choose from a whole bunch of news and other kinds of feeds, or you can add your own feed URL by copying-and-pasting it into the box:

  8. When you're done, click "Save," then click "Publish" at the top of the page to publish your updated profile.
That's pretty much it. One thing -- you do need to be able to find your blog's feed URL -- the feed module isn't "smart" enough right now to figure out the feed address by itself.

If you're using an AOL Journal, here's how you find your feed address:

  1. At the top of your Journal, find the orange feed icon and link that says "Get the Feed."
  2. Click "Get the feed manually." This will show the feed address.
  3. There are two kinds of feed addresses here; you can choose either (I prefer Atom) -- highlight the full address and copy it with your mouse, so you can paste it into your Feed Module when you're ready.
Remember, as long as you can find the feed address, you can display it in your feed module. So, if you've got a blog from  LiveJournal, Blogger, MySpace, WordPress or whoever, just drop the feed into the feed module and you're in business.

Thanks -- Joe
