Hearing Junkie XL, Youthful
Hi folks -- here's a fix that went in last week. It reduced the number of annoying "Module Initialization Failed" error popup dialog boxes that you'll see throughout AIM Pages:
Before, when an AIM Pages module got corrupted (it went bad for various reasons, usually during publishing -- that's about as technical as I get), the next time you went to view a profile with that bad module, you'd see the "Module Initialization Failed" error popup box.
If you had multiple bad modules, you'd get one error popup for each bad module.
The error popup contains the name of the module that's having problems, which is very useful if you're the profile owner, since you can then go into Advanced Edit mode and republish the bad module (which typically fixes the problem).
For example, in the above picture, the code snippet module, the pictures viewer module (you can't really see that one), and the comments module are all throwing errors, so you would try deleting those modules, republishing your profile, then re-adding them.
However, if you're just visiting someone else's profile, and they have a bad module, you'll get the error, and as a visitor, you can't do anything about it. That's not helpful, and in fact, it's downright annoying.
So, what the team did was make it so you're not going to see error popups like that any more... unless you're looking at the module in Advanced Edit Mode, which is the only time that you, the profile owner, can do anything to fix the problem.
However, the important thing to remember, is that while visiting viewers won't be getting error messages, the module will still be broken.
Error messages are kind of like the software equivalent of pain -- they're annoying, but they tell you something's wrong that needs fixing.
So, when you look at your profile, if you see any module that seems to be broken, or is otherwise acting squirrely:
1. First, run down the list of 7 Ways to Fix Common AIM Pages Profile Problems
2. If you get down to Step 5 ("deleting modules in Advanced Edit mode"), pay attention to any error popup dialog you get. This will tell you the names of which modules need to be republished.
3. Go into Advanced Edit Mode and delete the problem modules. If you have info in a module that you don't want to retype, you can copy and paste it into a text document somewhere so you can paste it back. Comments will be saved even if you delete your comments module; pictures may need to be repicked from your albums, but they'll still be in your online album at pictures.aol.com.
4. Republish your profile.
5. Go back into Advanced Edit Mode and re-add the modules you want.
Thanks -- Joe
