New Profile Settings: Private Profile & More

Hey buddies -- last Thursday, the Publisher team rolled out a new release (Publisher is the technology that powers AIM Pages). I was going to blog about it on Friday, but I needed to check a few things first.

There are a few changes -- some little, some mid-sized, and one big change. First, the big change -- Private Profiles.

Yes, AIM Pages originally launched with the idea that all profiles would be public, and that we would add in private profiles at a later time.

That time is now.

To change your profile privacy settings:

1. Click the "Edit" button on the top-right of your profile, to go into Quick Edit Mode

2. Click the new Profile Settings tab:

3. You'll see two privacy settings, which I will copy-and-paste because I'm lazy:
  • Make my page public.
Your profile will be included in AIM Pages Search, and anyone can view it.
  • Keep my page private.
Only your AIM Pages Buddies can view your profile, and you won't show up in AIM Pages Search.
Make your choice, then click "Save" at the bottom of the page. You should be able to switch between public & private without any problem.

Now that we have Private Profiles, that enables change #2 (which is middlin'-to-big): The age requirement to create AIM Pages Profiles has been lowered to 13 (it was 16 before).

Here's how it's going to work, by age group:
  • 13-15: AIM Pages profiles are private, only viewable by Buddies who have accepted your Buddy Invite.
  • 16-18: Profiles are private by default, but you can choose to make your profile public (using the settings I talked about above)
  • 18+: Profiles are public by default; you can make yours private, should you desire.
Another middlin' change is the way Buddy Requests are handled. You now have 3 settings (the options will vary depending on your age):
  •  I want to manually approve and deny all Buddy Requests.
  •  Automatically approve Buddy Requests sent by people on my AIM Buddy list.
  •  Automatically approve all of my Buddy Requests.
When you approve a Buddy Request, you'll show up in the requestor's Buddy Gallery, so pick the level you're comfortable with.

The last new feature on the page is the "Reset Profile" link. Before, you had to go into Advanced Edit Mode to reset your profile. Now, you can reset your profile from Quick Edit Mode.

Now, for those folks who have an AIM Pages profile, but want to go back to a Member Directory Profile: You're supposed to be able just reset your AIM Pages profile and go to Member Directory to create a Member Directory profile.

However, it doesn't work for everyone.

In a comment in my current How to Delete Your AIM Pages Profile entry, Sadisticelysium offers a procedure that works for some folks, but it's pretty convoluted and also doesn't work for some folks we've tested it with.

So, we've asked the dev team to take another look at why resetting profiles sometimes won't let you back into a Member Directory profile.

Also in the Publisher release were some bug fixes, as well as a change to how Modules work in Advanced Edit Mode (I'll talk about it in a future entry -- in a nutshell: modules will tell you when there's a updated version available).

Thanks -- Joe
