Hearing Lust for Life, Iggy Pop

Not the Police Presence You Expect on MySpace

Hey buddies -- here's another one for the "busted for being stupid on your public profile"-file, only this time, it's about a Missoula County, Montana sheriff's deputy who got fired for his doings on the MySpace [link via Obscurestore.com]

According to reports, Sgt. Ty Evenson created a MySpace profile to "[improve] relations between law enforcement and the public," though apparently, he had different relations in mind:
"A three-week investigation revealed that Evenson's browsing criteria on MySpace were set to "swinger" and "women," and shows he initiated contact with hundreds of women across the country who identified themselves as strippers, prostitutes and porn stars. The messages were frequently sexually suggestive and "occasionally in very sexually explicit language," according to McMeekin's letter.

Nearly all of the activity took place while Evenson was on duty and using county-owned equipment, software and Internet access accounts."
The part that got him in trouble, of course, was the using county resources, while on-duty, and then trying to cover it up. (It was the covering up bit which was the firing offense.)

(I was kind of surprised to see that his profile is still up. I'm not going to link it, but it's there if you search on it.)

From the article, it seems like a slam dunk, though the now-former officer is deciding whether to fight his firing.

Now, while this particular bit of fun occurred on MySpace, it could have happened anywhere someone has a socially shared online profile. So please, be smart in your blogging and online profiling, and let's not be reading about you in some news article down the road.

Thanks -- Joe
