Feeling Surprised
The Death of Eddie Guerrero....
I thought I bring up the death of a wrestler named Eddie Guerrero. He was 38 years old and he died while brushing his teeth before the tapings of RAW and Smackdown! yesterday in Minnesota. The WWE is having tribute shows all this week. Anyway, with many deaths hitting us hard in the world of professional sports, most recently Jason Collier, I thought I'd just chime in on this.
Eddie Guerrero battled many personal demons throughout his life. He struggled with alcohol, drugs, and he came close to death on multiple occasions. Since returning to wrestling in 2002, Eddie has been on a roll. He captured his first WWE Heavyweight Championship in early 2004. He was the hottest act in wrestling. Despite being on a career role, Eddie decided the pressure of being champion was too much for him. The decision was made to take the title off of Eddie in the summer of 2004. Eddie seemed to be in a funk. He was put in a feud with Rey Mysterio, which lasted about 2 months too long. Recently, Eddie started to get on that role again. He was scheduled to win the Heavyweight Title for a second time. Eddie was scheuled to carry the Smackdown! brand. Then, yesterday morning Eddie died of a heart failure in his hotel room while he was brushing his teeth in the morning. You never know when it's going to be all over....
This death also teaches us that maybe he push our favorite athletes too hard. Wrestling is very unique, as the superstars are traveling about 340 days a year. They get days off for Christmas, Thanksgiving, some other high holidays, but that's about it. You take bumps in the ring, and you do get hurt of taking bumps in the ring, even if the moves are fake. You are forced to perform at least once every day, and after a while your injuries catch up to you. Taking time off for an injury that isn't extremely serious is looked down upon, so most wrestlers just get addicted to pain killers and other drugs. That's very similar to all the other sports. We push our favorite athletes to compete, and we as fans hate it when an athlete takes time off for an injury that isn't severe. We say they should suck it up, but if we had that injury we would be in bed for weeks. We need to remember that sports is just entertainment, and athletes are people too....
