Diabetes Foundation Loses its Way By Michael Fumento

IF they make it beyond the Petri dish, these embyronic cells could help with diabetes in something over a decade.

 The slick Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International flyer that appeared in Sunday newspapers throughout the country showed a little girl on monkey bars with her hand just inches from the next bar. "The cure is so close we can almost touch it," her accompanying mother says. Likewise, JDRF Chairwoman Mary Tyler Moore proclaimed in a recent TV commercial, "We are so close to finding a cure."

So wrong. JDRF is the world's largest juvenile diabetes philanthropy, distributing over $85 million in grants last year. Yet it supports no efforts that could lead to a cure any time soon for this blinding and crippling disease that afflicts as many as 1.7 million Americans. Instead it's become a lobby for controversial embryonic stem cell research and refuses to help fund the only study that could soon bring a cure.

Don't take my word for it. On the JDRF website's "stem cell information" page you'll find more links to ESC advocacy articles, editorials/Op-Eds and testimonies than a German wurst-maker has links.

"For further information" it refers readers to a single group – the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research. But the only research CAMR seeks to advance concerns embryos; indeed, it's the nation's largest ESC lobbying group. JDRF was one of the eight founding members of CAMR in 2000 and the 2001 CAMR chairman was Lawrence Soler, currently a vice-president with the JDRF.

JDRF's chairman of program development, Gail Pressberg, is a senior fellow for the left-wing Civil Society Institute, which periodically releases slanted-question polls to persuade the federal and state governments to spend more on ESC research. Speaking of one such poll intended to support a New Jersey ESC bond initiative, Pressberg said in a press release: "This survey shows widespread support in New Jersey for letting the public decide the fate of state funding for stem-cell research." As ESC backers so often do, she left out the word "embryonic" to obfuscate the issue.

The top item on JDRF's "issue information" page is "Embryonic Stem Cell Research," with subcategories like Progress with Embryonic Stem Cell Research. It also bashes what many see as an alternative that's both medically superior and carries no moral baggage – adult stem cells. Its "Limitations of Adult Stem Cell Research" link is packed with such disinformation as "Adult stem cells cannot be induced to develop into any cell type." In fact, since 2002 at least four different labs have published results indicating they can.

Now try the American Diabetes Association website. You won't see glorification of ESCs or bashing of ASCs. Those quaint folk only seem to care about diabetes, not politics.

If want to support ESC research, send a check to JDRF. But if want a cure for diabetes, you may as well send it here.

 

By no means do all the members of JDRF buy into the ESC propaganda, but they aremuzzled by the higher-ups. One form parents were forced to sign to attend the JDRF Children's Congress of 2003 stated: "If there is discussion of such controversial topics as embryonic stem-cell research, I will either embrace the JDRF legislative position on such topics or will not work against the JDRF position."

The JDRF also contributed $1 million to California's Proposition 71, which will funnel $3 billion in state funds to ESC researchers. Rep. Michael Castle, R.-Del., an ardent ESC research advocate, told the National Journal's Neil Munro that JDRF's ESC promotion is "the best lobbying campaign I've ever seen."

The ESC obsession "just flies in the face of their mission," insists Larry Raff, a former JDRF fundraiser and now president of the Autoimmune Disease Research Foundation. Raff and his wife have actually donated embryos for experimentation. But he knows what any honest ESC researcher will tell you – that if ESCs ever translates into any human therapy it won't within the decade. "So close?"

Meanwhile, as I've written previously, Harvard researcher Dr. Denise Faustman was the first to cure diabetes in mice and now seeks funds for a clinical trial to replicate her fantastic results in humans. Thrice she has applied to JDRF; thrice they have rejected her. Never mind her impeccable credentials and that she even reviewed grants for JDRF.

        Her transgression seems to be that her treatment involves restoring dead insulin-producing cells in the pancreas with ASCs already present in the body. Despite what the JDRF would have you think there have already been tremendous breakthroughs in ASC therapy, with over 80 treatments and almost 300 human clinical trials underway – versus zero treatments or trials for ESCs. Still, nothing would belie the false claims of ESC lobbyists more than curing diabetes with ASCs.

Of course there may be other reasons for rejecting Faustman, but JDRF won't say what they are. They refused to let me interview them, specifically citing my prior writings favorable to ASC research. Curious, that.

Former top Time Warner executive J. Richard Munro once chaired the JDRF board but is now bitter towards the group and sits on the board of Raff's organization instead. "I'm a huge fan of Denise [Faustman] and simply cannot understand why JDRF won't fund her," he told me. "For 25 years my two sons have been diabetic and it's maddening that nothing has changed."

Nor will it, if we count on the "so close" JDRF.

Bush buries the shame of Yalta

Thank you, President George W. Bush, for correcting history and making a long overdue apology for one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's tragic mistakes. Speaking in Latvia on May 7, Bush repudiated "the agreement at Yalta" by which powerful governments negotiated away the freedom of small nations.

Bush accurately blamed Yalta for "the captivity of millions in Central and Eastern Europe" and said it "will be remembered as one of the greatest wrongs of history." This admission has been 50 years coming, and Bush's words assure that "the legacy of Yalta was finally buried, once and for all."

It was at Yalta, a filthy Russian port on the Black Sea, where our dying president in February 1945 made a secret agreement with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin to surrender millions of people to Communist oppression behind what Churchill a year later labeled the Iron Curtain. No treaty was submitted to the U.S. Senate; indeed, the record of what went on at Yalta was not released until 10 years later.

The Soviets demanded, and FDR acquiesced, that the conference be held on Soviet soil (where they could plant listening devices). Churchill said, "If we had spent 10 years on research we could not have found a worse place in the world than Yalta. ... It is good for typhus and deadly lice which thrive in those parts."

FDR came home from Yalta and made a false report to Congress. Calling it "a personal report to you and to the people of the country" he asserted, "This conference concerned itself only with the European war and with the political problems of Europe, and not with the Pacific war."

Here is a list of the European AND Asian concessions he made to Stalin, which were confirmed by the Yalta documents released on March 16, 1955.

- Poland was turned over to the Soviet Union. The United States and Britain agreed to recognize Communist stooges as the new Polish government and to withdraw recognition from the legitimate anti-Communist government of Stanislaw Mikolajczyk.

- Germany was to be dismembered, its "national wealth" removed within two years, and several million Germans were to be sent to the Soviet Union to work as slave laborers. The record quotes Roosevelt as saying, "I hope Marshal Stalin would again propose a toast to the execution of 50,000 officers of the German army."

- All Russian citizens who had fled to Germany from Communism were to be forcibly returned to the Soviet Union (i.e., the gulag).

- The Soviet Union was allowed to keep control of Outer Mongolia, which the Soviets had seized from China. The southern part of Sakhalin and all the adjacent islands were given outright to the Soviets.

- The Kurile Islands were given outright to the Soviets, and Port Arthur was given to the Soviets for use as a naval base. The Soviets were given effective control of the commercial port of Dairen, the Chinese-Eastern Railroad and the South-Manchurian Railroad, using the subterfuge of assuring that the Soviet Union's "pre-eminent" interests would be "safeguarded."

- The Soviet Union was given three votes in the United Nations, while all other nations got only one.

Roosevelt's defenders have tried to claim that his concessions were necessary to bribe Stalin to enter the war against Japan. The Yalta papers prove that was false: 3 1/2 months before the Yalta meeting, Ambassador Averell Harriman had relayed to Roosevelt a "full agreement from Stalin not only to participate in the Pacific war, but to enter the war with full effort."

Russia wasn't needed in the Pacific war, and letting Russia in simply opened the way for a Communist empire in China and North Korea. This set the stage for the Korean War in the 1950s and for the son of the original North Korean Communist dictator to threaten us with nuclear weapons today.

News photos of the Yalta meeting reveal the hovering presence of the Communist spy Alger Hiss. As the chief adviser to Secretary of State Edward Stettinius, Hiss attended nearly all the Yalta meetings and could be reached on telephone No. 3, right after FDR. with No. 1 and Stettinius with No. 2.

Hiss was given all top-secret files and documents about the U.S. position 19 days before the conference. Sen. William Knowland, R-Calif., said this made FDR "like a man playing poker with a mirror at his back."

While Republicans and honest writers such as David Lawrence and John T. Flynn denounced the Yalta betrayal, the pro-Roosevelt media praised it. Time called Yalta "a great achievement," Life called it "a success," and the New York Times called it "a milestone on the road to victory and peace."

But truth finally overtakes lies and cover-ups. President Bush set the record straight when he repudiated Yalta as part of the "unjust tradition" of Munich and the Hitler-Stalin pact that carved up Europe and left millions in oppression.

I promised to share more pictures and now I have them. Asher is a funny personality of dog and we get a lot of laughs with him. He loves our family and will bark but not bite strangers. If introduced properly he is usually friendly to them and that is a relief with Chihuahuas although I have noticed the long hairs are friendlier. Alex loves him and Asher returns the affection usually. He is napping next to me and is making his usual dream yips. LOL and goodnight.

"Honey" she said, "would you fix my shot, I'm having a hard time breathing."
"Sure" I replied, glancing at the clock, 04:30 AM... what a way to start the day. The night before, she and I had been sitting up, looking at wall paper samples and laughing uproariously.

"How about green stripes with blue daffodils and orange crocodiles." and the laughter would start all over again. The last laughter as it turned out.

I woke my daughter and said "Stay with your mom, I've called an ambulance and I'm going to make sure it doesn't pass the house." I went back into the bedroom.

"I'm going to die." she said. "It'll be ok honey, the ambulance is on it's way." I said, we had been through asthma attacks before, lots of them.

I heard the siren and ran outside to make sure it didn't pass, when the ambulance crew and I went inside, she had collapsed. Furiously we did CPR and after a while she seemed to stabalize. The Ambulance Crew rushed her to the hospital, my daughter and I following. While we were registering her, the doc came and told me she didn't make it. It was an embolism he said, had she been in the ER when this happened, they couldn't have saved her. My life was over, my best friend was gone, my heart broken.

I don't know how I made it through the next several months, and except for the love of God, my family, my beloved daughter, and my friends I probably wouldn't have.

I'm a counselor, a psychotherapist, I'm supposed to know how to handle grief, how to deal with psychic pain and emotional trauma. Hah!

I eventually worked through the loss! I met someone, fell in love again and re-married.

I usually don't share the above with any but a selected few, but I've been doing a "Grief Share" at my church, with people who have lost a loved one in the recent past. Because I'm a counselor, and I know what people have been though, I expect that I have something to share, something that they can use also.

On the way home today, after church, I got to thinking about Terri Schiavo's parents. They are aware, that in a very few days, the 18th of March, 2005 to be exact, the courts will allow her spouse to "terminate" Terri's existance. What a travesty of justice.

In 1987, I began working in a private psychiatric hospital as the program director for the adult psychiatric unit. One of the books we used with clients was Judith Viorst's "Necessary Losses", a passage reproduced here:

"In 1984, I watched three women I loved very dearly die of cancer. All of them in their fifties, all of them vitally in life, they -- all of them in cruel prematurity -- died. One faced her fate straight on -- she knew she was dying, she talked about death, she calmly accepted it. One, knowing death was near and wishing to choose her moment of dying, hoarded pills and committed suicide. And one, the blond-haired, blue-eyed interloper I'd known since birth -- my sister Lois -- fought against her death, until the moment she closed her eyes, with awesome ferocity."

"With awesome ferocity." What a terrific phrase for someone that refuses to die.

Won't face reality you say? Living (as it were) in a fantasy world you say? Can't accept death as part of life you say? Good Lord, how do I get through to people that think that? Of course, death is a necessary and wonderful part of life, my God, without death, life itself would not be possible. But, apply that to NEEDLESS death, death such as faced by Terri.

I'm pretty sure that her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, understand that in the normal course of events, given Terri's condition, that they are likely to outlive Terri. But, I doubt if Terri does. And that makes this travisty even more agonizing, Terri is being accorded less in the way of justice than mistreated and starved animals, less than convicted criminals on death row.

If Terri could communicate her wishes, I have no doubt that she, like Judith Viorst's sister would fight with every thing she had to keep on keeping on.

There are people like Lois at every age and with all kinds of fatal ailments who hang on to hope, who fight to stay alive, trusting in will, in spirit, in remissions, in brand-new miracle drugs or -- in miracles. "Don't they know they can't make it?" we may wonder, having heard the grim statistics. But they have heard them too, and what they do is tell us, and themselves, "I'm not a statistic."

In videotapes about a thirty-nine-year-old doctor painfully dying of cancer, he -- and his wife and a brother and doctors and clergymen -- describe his harrowing struggle to stay alive. In his final weeks, refusing to quit, he insisted on being fed through a vein in his neck and as the pain worsened he grew so dependent upon narcotic drugs that he underwent -- observers agreed -- a personality change. Some doctors have said that by his insistence on taking command of his case, this man prolonged his life -- unnecessarily. But just before he died, when asked by his wife if his fight for survival had been worth it, he answered with an unequivocal "Yes."

As Dylan Thomas said:

"Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

This is not the time too, to stop fighting for Terri. Don't let the urgency of the last few days go out like a "candle in the wind." “Jeb Bush Could Save Terri Schiavo’s Life…If He Wanted To”

Recently, the US Supreme Court paved the way for the execution of Terri Schiavo beginning February 22. She is the brain-damaged woman whose husband has been trying to starve and dehydrate her to death for years. Florida Governor Jeb Bush should have responded, ”you better believe I’m not going to allow an innocent woman to be executed in the most cruel way imaginable in my state! We wouldn’t do that to a dog, and I’m not about to let it happen to Terri Schiavo! No sir, not on my watch”! Instead, we got: “I will do whatever I can do within the powers that have been granted to me by law and by statute. I will do whatever I can. I’m not going to do more than that,” and “I really don’t know what options we have available, but I will take whatever options I think there are".

Perhaps I can help. Florida’s state constitution says “All natural persons, female and male alike, are equal before the law and have inalienable rights, among which are the right to enjoy and defend life and liberty, to pursue happiness…No person shall be deprived of any right because of race, religion, national origin, or physical disability.” The fact that a Circuit Judge continues to ignore Florida statutes does not change the state constitution. Jeb Bush took an oath to uphold that constitution and yet (despite receiving 120,000 e-mails begging him to save her), he let Terri Schiavo starve (and dehydrate) for six days back in October 2003 until the Florida legislature passed a law that gave him political cover. Now that the courts have struck down “Terri’s Law”, don’t be surprised if Jeb behaves as if the constitution he swore to uphold is still not relevant to Terri Schiavo. Don’t be surprised if he allows her husband to slowly starve and dehydrate her to death.

As you know by now if you’ve seen the videos, Terri tries to communicate and is fully aware of what is going on around her. There is also medical evidence to suggest that a criminal investigation should be launched to try to determine whether her husband may have caused her current disabled state back in 1990. What you probably don’t know is: (A) there never was alocal criminal investigation of Terri’s case in Pinellas County; (B) I personally handed the medical evidence to Jeb at a public appearance he made at a nursing home dedication on August 21, 2003: and © former federal prosecutors (now with the Thomas More Law Center) gave Jeb all the legal justification he would have needed to personally intervene on Terri’s behalf on the first two days of her six-day ordeal!

Consider his track record. On Day Two of Terri’s starvation (October 16,2003), Jeb said his legal staff could find no statutory justification to intervene in the court decision that approved Terri’s death. Richard Thompson (chief counsel of the Thomas More Law Center) shot back: “Nobody is asking the Governor to intervene in the civil case. We are asking him to initiate an independent criminal investigation based on a list of facts that suggest criminal wrongdoing. We have outlined for the Governor some of these facts, and confirmed his Constitutional authority to act. The fact that he has chosen to confuse the public by referring to the civil case, completely ignoring the request that we presented, reveals a lack of moral courage and political will. We expect the Governor to do the right thing, and so far, he has refused to do so.”

In the ensuing 16 months, Jeb has steadfastly refused to order the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to do an investigation. Is he more concerned about how he is perceived by the editorial boards of Florida’s big daily papers (most of whom want Terri dead) than with saving an innocent woman’s life? Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family recently “renewed his call for the preservation of the life of Terri Schiavo". If we really want that to happen, we need to put the heat on Jeb. P.S. Did you catch what the swiftvets did to John Kerry? For that matter, have you noticed the growing influence of blogs? If Jeb lets Terri die, it probably would not be wise for him to run for office again.

For I am your greatest encourager …2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 Thursday, February 17, 2005 Terri Schiavo's Brother Speaks Out - "Blogs for Terri" http://hyscience.typepad.com/hyscience/ Exclusive What follows is the text of an interview with a frustrated brother speaking up about the way his sister has been treated, what his family has had to endure, and the very strange behavior of Michael Schiavo toward his sister and Terri's family. Following the press conference at the Woodside Hospice on Wednesday, Hyscience, ProLifeBlogs and Teknosis , in behalf of Blogs for Terri - interviewed Bobby Schindler, Terri Schiavo's brother. The questions and Bobby's answers in their entirety are as follows: 1. What is Terri's current health status? How is she holding up? Physically Terri seems to be ok. However, we do not really know her true medical condition because Michael Schiavo, against court order, instructs all medical information to be withheld from our family. This has been going on since 1993. We are so incredibly frustrated that if we should inquire about Terri's health, we are told... "Michael has instructed us that we cannot tell you anything about Terri's condition". It's hard to imagine that any parent could be told that they are not allowed to know anything about their child's wellbeing, but this is what Michael Schiavo has been instructing the nurses since 1993. 2. How are you and the rest of your family doing? Our family is holding up pretty good under the circumstances. I think we stay strong for Terri because she is staying strong for us, and showing an incredible iron will to live. We love Terri just the way she is and we have banded together as her family to fight with all that we have in order to stop this inhumane treatment she has been enduring at the hands of her 'husband'. My family will not stand by and watch a family member being starved to death by judicial order. It has been a long an arduous battle, but we'll never give up on Terri. 3. What impact has this had on your family? We have been impacted in so many ways. Not only has this made our family stronger but our love for each other and for Terri has grown immensely. The hundreds of thousands of people we have heard from supporting Terri have made a huge impact on us. It has kept our faith strong and re-instilled our belief that there is true power in the lover and prayers of people everywhere. We have read heartbreaking stories of so many people in more tragic situations than ours, and that many people who have loved ones worse off than Terri that are truly scared by what is happening to her. We feel blessed to have the love and support of so many people we don't even know. 4. What message would you like to see bloggers communicate? Terri's condition, from the beginning of this court battle, has been mischaracterized by the media. Although the court has sided with Michael Schiavo's two doctors at the original trial in January 2000 that Terri is in a PVS condition, there have been at least twelve doctors since then that have testified to the court adamant that Terri is NOT in a PVS. Additionally, these doctors have testified that with proper therapy Terri could improve significantly, be taught to speak, and learn to eat food again, which would then mean Terri would not need the assistance of a feeding tube. Also, all the abuse/neglect that have been ongoing since 1993. It astounds me that the court allows Michael Schiavo, as Terri Schaivo's legal guardian, to treat Terri in the manner that Terri is being treated. From not permitting Terri to go outside for over four years, to ordering Terri's nurses to pull her shades completely shut in her room. You can read the >list of abuses at www.zimp.org/abuse Lastly, state agencies that are in place to protect people like my sister are grossly failing their responsibilities to protect vulnerable adults like my sister. There has never been an investigation conducted to see if Michael Schiavo attacked Terri the night she collapsed, despite the overwhelming evidence that has been gathered the last two years suggesting that something horrible happened to Terri that night (Please visit www.zimp.org/stuff). For example, there exists a bone scan taken in 1991, illustrating broken bones throughout Terri's body, but only was recently discovered in November 2002, and no agency in the state of Florida seems to care how this occurred, and that Terri's husband might be the reason Terri's in the condition that she is in today. These state agencies are also permitting the abuse/neglect of my sister regardless of numerous Florida Statutes that are clearly being violated. These agency have a responsibility and a duty to protect vulnerable adults, but for some unexplained reason they will not intervene in my sister situation 5. What can bloggers do to support the Schindler family and Terri? It might sound like a cliche, but getting the truth out about Terri's condition, open an investigation to see what happened the night Terri collapsed, and to investigate all these abuses and neglect that are ongoing. 6. Have blogger made a noticeable impact in the fight for Terri? Yes, my family is getting flooded with emails asking how to help and offering prayers of support. I am also seeing the increase of acitivity and stories that are being written in support of my sister. As I said, this has been very uplifting and inspiring for my family to read and we are so grateful for the time every blogger is taking to bring out the truth and save my sister. I'm also grateful for the time everyone is taking to write and contact people that can help save my sister. I only wish that I was able to respond to everyone. Maybe when we save Terri, I can sit down and thank each and every person that has taken the time to email my family supporting my sister's life. 7. How often do you interact with Terri? Could you describe this interaction? We interact with Terri several times a week. When we visit with Terri she is always happy to see us. She lights up when she hears my mom's voice, beginning with a huge grin and laugh, then by trying so hard to talk. No doctor in the world can ever convince my family that Terri isn't responding to us when we visit her and that Terri isn't trying to communicate with us. It is sad that we are unable to understand what she is trying to say as she desperately needs speech therapy. She has not had any speech therapy in over twelve years. She usually gets tired and then just listens as we tell her about the latest family events. She sometimes cries when we say we are leaving. 9. What can individuals do in FL (locally) and through-out the world to help Terri? Is there one specific person bloggers and blog readers should concentrate on contacting? That is a good question. We will soon post on Terri's web, www.terrisfight.org and with Blogs for Terri, an action plan that people can do to help save Terri. I have to think that if we get a groundswell of enough people contacting the Governor, the Florida legislatures, the media, and anyone that is in a position to help, we can show that starving an innocent human being to death is wrong, and absolutely inhumane and it can't be tolerated. Also, I hope that we can find out one day what happened to Terri the night she collapsed. 10. What legal avenues are the Schindler's presently pursuing? There are several valid legal issues that are or will be in front of Judge George Greer. Terri's web lists all the present legal actions. 11. What is the plan if these avenues fail? Last week a story was published in the New York Times about new brain scan imagining that could help persons like Terri. This news came out of no where and many of us feel it was a gift from God. We have to keep praying that God will continue to protect Terri and that through Him; we will find a way to save my sister. There is no doubt that if any member of my family was in Terri's place, she would be fighting just as hard for us. As I said, Terri is clearly showing her tremendous will to live, and has never given up on us. My family will never give up on Terri. - And never will Blogs for Terri and their thousands of readers! Alex as a teenager and Asher the wonder rat staying cool.  Asher is a long hair Chihuahua and barely resembles the Taco dog who is a classic shorthair. We had friend visit recently with their shorthairs in a carrier. Asher was curious but kept his distance as he has been handraised by humans. The 'girls' wanted to play and got out to wander the hallway for some social moments but Asher knew they were too young for the play he is interested in. The search for a good longhair female Chihuahua continues. As soon as I get those recent pictures out of the digital camera I will post a pic of Asher in all his winter coat glory. Alex will also get more mention and pictures as time goes on.

I do not blame Playboy, Las Vegas, the gay agenda, Air America, or whomever for our societal tooth decay. I blame the "righteous" ones who will not shamelessly proclaim truth in such a way that it is persuasive, provocative and preserving. Yes, churches that do not seriously stand for truth commit institutional suicide and effectively marginalize themselves, rather than being the salt-shaking organisms God has called them to be.

Amen to that. So go forth and be salty is what I say.
