Time for a new camera?  Help!

Can you help me choose a new digital camera?

That's my camera above. I've had it for about 4 or 5 years.     It still works, and takes upto 2.1 Megapixel photos!  (Wow, I hear you say - but that is probably enough for the kind of snaps I take).    But the big problem is -- it's just too clunky now.    It is a little like the old cell phones that used to be the size of a brick.  You can see from the photo, that it's as big as a Diet Coke can (or even Classic Coke!).

My trustworthy Sony camera has done me well -- I've taken thousands of photos with it (most of which I uploaded to AOL Pictures).    But it's time to look for another camera.  It can't fit into my pocket.  And all my mates seem to have snazzy, small cameras.

So where do I start?   What do you recommend?

Here's what I'd like :
  • Takes great photos.
  • Good Zoom (nothing crazy, I am not David Bailey)
  • Good power - can be re-charged or doesn't drain too fast.
  • Small enough to fit in the pocket.
  • Steady. It can be small, but you don't want it to shake all around.
That probably doesn't narrow it down :-)  But I am sure the community at large here can give me some useful tips or point me in the right direction!

Check out the Sony "W" line of P&S cameras.  They are 6+MP and very small.  They use removable memory and have selectable file sizes.  You will be able to take webshots at the proper resolution, and then select a full size file if you are snapping something that you would like to print 8x10 or bigger.  Sony makes some great cameras, and currently they are all I use (FD-200, and F828).  My mother-in-law just bought a W30 and is very happy with it.  I have played around a bit with it, and have determined that it is a very versitile camera.  Lots of preset scene modes, along with full auto, and aperture and shutter priority modes.  The zoom is a bit limited, but not too bad.  I think the focal length is somewhere around 35-128mm give or take.  They run around $200.

I don't have a model recommendation for you since my priorities in cameras are different but I got my Canon at Costco because of their very generous return/exchange policy. I'm not sure if anythings changed in the last year but at the time I was researching cameras SD memory had the best performance (it could save photos faster allowing you to take photos faster).

Depending on how small you want to go, I would check out the canon powershot SD series.  I have the 450, and a co-worker bought the 500.  So far I have no complaints.  I used to have an A70 from Canon, and it seems as though all the things I didn't like (double A batteries = clunky, big size, compact flash) was fixed in the newer release.  Plus the resolution and lcd have been upgraded.  The zoom may be lacking a bit depending on what you take, but I'm sure it will work fine for all the cat pics :)

My cousin has a Casio...the EX-Z1000. He LOVES it and raves about it when ever people ask (and they ask all the time because it's such a cool looking little camera with a big display). http://exilim.casio.com/

I want to get one, but I just can't justify getting a new camera yet. My Canon PowerShot S50 works fine, even if it isn't super slim with a big honkin display. :-)

Will -- I blogged some thoughts about what I currently use (an obsolete-when-purchased 3.2 megapixel Canon SD200 Powershot):

Also, does that camera of yours get all fizzy when you shake it? -- Joe, Journals Editor
