Movies to watch in 2006

Tonight being Oscars night, I thought I'd blog about movies. Following is my list of must-watch-in-the-theater movies for '06. Ever since the birth of our daughter (who is turning 2 next week), we've hardly been able to go to the cinema. But I guess the wife and I will have to figure out something for these :)

1. Superman Returns - (currently June 30th, 2006)

The return of Kal-El. 'nuf said. I wish they had done the Doomsday storyline. But this should be great fun too going by director Bryan Singer's record (X-Men, X2). Warner Bros did well with Batman Begins last year and this re-ignites the other main WB super-hero franchise. Could there be a Batman vs Superman in the future? (there certainly have been rumors). Full Disclosure: Warner Bros is a Time Warner company.

2. DaVinci Code - (May 19, 2006)

Tom Hanks as Dan Brown's Robert Langdon. Should be interesting. Speaking of Dan Brown, whatever happened to Solomon's Key -- the sequel to DaVinci Code set in Washington D.C. that was supposed to come out last year...?

3. V for Vendetta - (March 17, 2006)

Even though I was hugely disappointed by Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, I'll give the Wachowski brothers another chance. Full Disclosure: Warner Bros is a Time Warner company.

4. MI:3 - (May 5, 2005)

Was on the fence with the trailer ... but one thing is for sure that this is a big-screen movie!

The following are also worth mentioning but I will probably wait for the DVD...

- Miami Vice (in theaters July 28, 2006 - DVD expected fall 2006)

One of the 80s series I used to regularly follow (its up there along with Airwolf, Knight Rider, A-Team and beginning 1988, of course, Star Trek: The Next Generation). The original soundtrack (opening theme) by Jan Hammer remains one of my all-time favories (along with themes from, you guessed it, Airwolf, Knight Rider, ST:TNG and Mission:Impossible).

- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (in theaters July 7, 2006 - DVD expected fall 2006)

The first one was a blast. Let's see if the sequel lives up to the expectations (as we all know, sequels rarely do!)

- X-Men 3 (in theaters May 26, 2006 - DVD expected fall 2006)

I don't know I might bump this up to the theater list. With Bryan Singer busy with Supes, Brett Ratner directed this one and I'm not sure if he'll be able to pull it off. I am, however, looking forward to the Wolverine movie (expected 2007).

Hmm...I just noticed most of these are being released in the summer blockbuster category...I'll probably end up adding some from later in the year as the dates firm up.

p.s. Still working on my Books to Read in 2006 list.
