AOL Open Services Developer's Conference - June 28th & 29th, 2006

Wow! Its been almost a month since I posted -- as I previously wrote, been very busy lately. One of the things I've been involved in was planning for our internal Open Services Developer Conference. I played a small role as part of the coordinating and planning team, but hats off to our speakers and partners who pulled together more than 40 sessions on a wide spectrum of technologies and services.

More than 500 attendees converged in "The Shire" in Lansdowne, VA -- yes the theme of the conference was Lord of the Rings, really cool! (check out the slideshow below). This is basically Sree Kotay's team's conference and he kicked off the day with the vision for the Open Services group and his take on Web 2.0. Sree was followed by our CEO Jon Miller who reinforced the vision/mission and also spoke about the Search long-tail and creating an "eco-system". The break-out sessions were scheduled after that and there were SIX parallel tracks going on -- decisions decisions! We also had partner kiosks from Microsoft, Intel, Industry Next and MapQuest (well, which is really just an AOL brand and not really a partner).

Day one ended with a really neat and fun Lord of the Rings themed team-building exercise/game dubbed "Middle Quest". Teams were given objects such as lambas bread, gold/silver coins, rings, etc and some middle-earth "cash". They also had two pieces of information about the worth of the items in the collections and/or a particular worth for a rival team. We had to negotiate and barter with other teams to maximize the value of our possessions and cash. Good elvish fun!

I'm off to attend the day 2 sessions... in the meanwhile check out the slideshow:

p.s.: Also, check out Dossy's excellent coverage of the conference.
