Welcome to BARC

WHAT IS BARC?

We are a not-for-profit, tax exempt organization located in Brevard County, Florida.  We started in June, 2001, when a group of citizens got together to discuss off-leash dog parks.  At the time, there weren't any in the county.  We formed our organization to try to encourage the county to build off-leash dog parks; provide educational information regarding dog parks; promote responsible dog ownership; garner a fraternal spirit among our members and to raise funds.  Any funds that we raise offset our operating expenses and help to pay for amenities in county dog parks.

Off-leash dog parks are fenced-in areas where dogs can legally and safely run, play and exercise while under the supervision of their owners.  Dog parks are quite common and very popular throughout the country.  We decided that we wanted dog parks here too!

In the beginning, we held a petition drive and, with the help of a lot of dedicated dog owners, we were able to collect signatures for over 6,000 people who agreed that Brevard County was overdue for some dog parks.  In 2002, we met with the Parks and Recreation Department and told them about our petition drive.  We were very pleased that they agreed with us that dog parks are needed here.

Since then, BARC has grown to over 500 members.  Dog parks have opened in Satellite Beach and at Wickham Park in Melbourne.  The latest addition is a new county dog park at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach.
