Been Thinking Again
According to the census taken in 2000, there were approximately 35 million people over the age of 65 in the United States. I was curious about these numbers after observing social patterns. Folks over 60 are often overlooked. It is as though they are invisible. An excellent place to see invisibility in action is in stores. At checkout counters, the elderly are at best patronized, then discounted and finally dismissed. "Hurry on old woman...Shuffle, shuffle old man," is the message.
Where is courtesy? Concern? What about the stamina it took to live to be 60 plus? Amazingly, they have survived. Instead of honoring and respecting these wise ones in community, often we discard.
Perhaps it is time for a change. How hard is it to smile, ask for an opinion, listen, offer an arm, or carry a grocery bag? Who knows, we just might make a friend and learn something.
Just a thought: None of us are getting any younger!
