An Answer Regarding Underpainting

Marie, doing an underpainting is an old painting technique often used for frescos and portraits as well as landscapes.  Usually the underpainting is done in tones of brown, or black/gray/white, allowed to dry, then enhanced with color by using glazes (a painting medium mixed with color).  I hope this answers your question.

I have painted only in my imagination but I enjoy knowing some of the mechanics of the art.  Thanks

I think I better go back to school...; (
I've been staring at this white canvas for the past week.
I took one class in oils & cannot remember anything.  Do you have any sites to show me some painting techniques.  I have covered some old canvases with gesso & was looking to apply some texture to the canvas.  I have not done an oil painting in about 28 years!
