Who's Not Into Whom?
This week, Ian Kerner's new book 'Be Honest, You're Not That Into Him Either: Raise Your Standards and Reach for the Love You Deserve' hits bookstore shelves -- and it's bound to hit some women the wrong way. I know several single women who read last fall's 'He's Just Not That Into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys' by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo and adopted it as their man-ifesto (sorry, couldn't resist...).
The latter book, whose title came from an episode of that oh-so-far-from-reality TV show 'Sex and the City,' certainly hit hard. And fast. Within days of its publication, everyone was talking about it, from Oprah on down. Behrendt and Tuccillo's thesis is that men know what they want, and they especially know what they don't want, so if he doesn't call? He's "just not that into you." End of story.
Kerner, a sex therapist and author of two previous books on male and female sexuality, doesn't necessarily think that's wrong -- but he does believe that instead of meekly agreeing that men should get what they want, women should learn to know what they want and be willing to hold out for it. Kerner is just as honest as Behrendt and Tuccillo -- but he's rooting for the girls' team (I know, I know, ahem, women's team...). He tempers real advice with a reality check: you're not that into him if you lowered your standards and dated him because you were lonely, you were horny, you needed an escort to a wedding... in fact, you'd probably like to hang up on him.
