From Our Files: Bookworm's Holiday

December 2004:

My last entry on this subject was titled with the more traditional phrase "busman's holiday" -- referring to the ironic fact that someone who drives all day for a living may well do the same while on vacation.

For me the irony of my reading, reading, reading while on vacation is exactly the opposite -- people think I do so for a living. One relative recently said "Gosh, Bethanne, how did you find a job where they'll let you read all day? Do you just sit back at your desk and open a book, or do you designate certain hours for reading?"

I love said kinswoman, but it was all I could do to keep myself from guffawing in her face. Would that I were paid to "read all day!" (That would be the ultimate dream job.) My day is filled with telephone calls, contract negotiations, staff meetings, Web publishing, and copy writing. The only reading I get to do during a typical nine-hour workday is of professional news and e-mails. (Mind you, I'm not complaining; getting to write about, discuss, and deal with books all day long is pretty dreamy.)That 'What I'm Reading Now' section of my signature block consists of books on my nightstand -- in other words, any books I read (fiction, nonfiction, heavy, light, good, bad, indifferent) are read whenever I can.

So a "bookworm's holiday" allows me blissfully un-ironic space and time to catch up on some of the reading I miss in my workaday existence. Not unlike many of my readers! Do you read different kinds of books when you know you've got more time (some people do, some people don't)? Do you "hoard" books like I do? Let me know -- you can respond to this entry or send me an email: bookmaven2005 at aol dot com.

I have this lovely second hand book store that I frequent regularly.  I have stacks of books in the attic waiting for me to read them, while I continue to bring in more books!  Sometimes while sorting through them I'll find I have purchased the same book several times...different editions!  I think its funny in a sick sort of way.  Addiction to books!
