What was the first book you treasured?

I'm in NY and have been caught up in meetings, so I'm in a bit of a rush. Forgive me for not blogging yesterday!

I was reading a memoir last night in which the author described a cherished belonging and thought, if I wrote a memoir, I would have to describe the childhood Christmas when I found a pile of hardcover books under the tree -- my first novels, after the usual early childhood fare of picture and poetry books. Unfortunately, I can't remember what they all were, but I do remember that at least two of them were Anne of Green Gables books. I still treasure them, along with the collection of Nancy Drew mysteries my mother keeps custody of for me.

What was the first book you treasured both as a wonderful read and as a possession?

The very first book I treasured was "Hans Brinker and The Silver Skates" (author's name now escapes me).

I no longer have the book.  It was lost somewhere between Jackson Heights, Texas, and Jackson Heights.  The book was given to me by my sister.  In an equal tie, the other book was given to me by my mother and father, November 1970), and the book was called "Happiness is Everywhere".  My mother wrote on the inside of the book, "To Isabel, With Love, Mother and Dad".  I still have this book. I am looking at it right now.

So much fun to read these answers... Bill, I know my sister's childhood shelf still holds her paperback of the McCaffrey, too. Speaking of 'Charlotte's Web,' I can still picture my old 'Stuart Little,' which unfortunately "drowned" in a tragic tub incident.

For me...  this would have to be DRAGONFLIGHT by Anne McCaffrey.  That was the book that confirmed me for life as a book lover.  Until then, I despised reading.  I still have the same paperback copy of that book on my bookshelf, too.
