Really wild about Harry...

This just in, from the Guardian: J.K. Rowling was nearly prevented from getting on her transatlantic flight back to Britain because she refused to be parted from her handwritten manuscript for Harry Potter Book Seven.

"A large part of it is handwritten and there was no copy of anything I had done while in the US." She wrote about the incident on her Web site. "They let me take it on thankfully, bound up in elastic bands."

Rowling was even prepared to take alternative methods of transport rather than be parted from the precious script, saying, "I don't know what I would have done if they hadn't [let me on] - sailed home probably."

Or taken the Hogwarts Express... note to authors everywhere: even if you write by hand, even if your manuscript is super-triple-ueber-secret and worth more than the Queen -- perhaps a set of pages done by Kinkos and stashed away with your trusted agent might help?

One advantage to writing entirely on the computer is that I just e-mail to myself what I've done as an attachment.  That way, it's still out there for me to retrieve even if my computer dies.
