Recommended Reading: 'The Lay of the Land'
Bascombe is back -- that link is to Karen Holt's Publisher's Weekly profile of Richard Ford, the masterful novelist who first introduced us to Frank Bascombe in his Easter-themed 'The Sportswriter,' continued Bascombe's story in 1995's 'Independence Day' (which won the Pulitzer), and now brings us 'The Lay of the Land' just in time for Thanksgiving.
I'm about halfway through Ford's latest, and can happily report that reading Frank Bascombe's story still feels somehow both comforting and unsettling. This is the kind of literary fiction that makes addicts of people -- you're learning about human nature, exploring your own psyche, and indulging in a beautifully modulated story all at the same time. I hope someone out there will consider picking this book up for their own holiday week/travels.
Is anyone else out there a Ford fan?
