MOS DEF: Bushwhacked !!!

By Karu F. Daniels, AOL Black Voices

Is life imitating art for rootsy rapper Mos Def?

Apparently so.

Earlier this year, Def (legally known as Dante Smith -- among other names) played a convict on the run in the Richard Donner-helmed thriller '16 Blocks.'

And this morning, he was arrested outside of the MTV Video Music Awards of all places.

According to published reports, the 'Topdog/Underdog' star "was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after an impromptu performance outside the 'Video Music Awards.'  Authorities said Mos Def and his entourage pulled up in a flatbed truck for an unscheduled show for the audience gathered outside."

"An NYPD spokesman said officers asked Mos Def to shut down the show for public safety. The rapper was performing "Katrina Clap," a freestyle indictment of the Bush administration's slow response to last year's hurricane in New Orleans."

Hmmmmm.  Okay.

Guess the media dodging hip-hop superstar has an album coming out soon.

And we all know that there is no better way to help sell an album than getting arrested (sans Lil' Kim).

"Mos Def was not out to break any laws," his flak Carleen Donovan of KSA Public Relations was quoted as saying.

"His only goal was to heighten the awareness of a serious situation that still exists in our country. He does not want people to forget that although it's one year later, the people and cities hit by the hurricane still need the help of the American people."

Oh okay.

Hmmmmm. "Most Def", a truly talented possibly frustrated young man. I've enjoyed his work in films etc. He's talented. Yes there was possibly a better platform for his message, but you have to be bold sometime. The people who freed this country from slavery wer both bold and creative. Rosa Parks bold and creative and just look at what she accomplished......MLK, bold, thre list is long......

I think there is a platform for all genres of expression that are legal. Had he gotten a liscense he would have been fine. Ignorant and disrespectful of the laws
I DO NOT BELEIVE HE IS NOR OR YOUNG BLACK MEN AND WOMEN IN GENERAL.
I gave birth to 3 who are college educated, I know many who are and many who aren't and they are wonderful very respectful young men and women ready to make their mark on the world as this young man has. They just mightr make a few mistakes on the way. But please allow them that.

I find people of color to be sxtremely gifted and creative and no less screw up by this world than their ethincally different  peers.

To xsitement: "Young black folks don't know the law or respect the Law." Are you kidding me with that garbage? Since when can you lump up all "young black folks?" You sound real ignorant for putting out such a sterotype. You annoyed me immensely with that one. I did not even bother to continue reading whatever else it was that you had to say. Just lump us all up with a comparison to a rapper? Whos job it is so stir up drama so as long as he puts an artistic spin on it.

Lets get it straight, not all young black people have such disregard for obeying the Law. Not only that but we deal with America's undercover racism each & every day. The racism that we deal with is not as out right & blatant as it once was. Its the kind the goes undetected except for those that are dealing with it & then we we speak up we are accused of "pulling the race card." So please try not to speak for a generation that you know nothing about.

Obviously, you don't know any young, African American, working class, college graduates. I guess the young black folks that YOU are exposed to have no regard for the law. Maybe that is what you should have said.

He got arrested because he broke a law. Young Black folks do not know the law or respect the law. Then they will blame the cops. As soon as we realize that we are living in a Caucasian ran society then will we learn to play the game just as the Chinese do, who is sucking the money out of this country unscathed. What we need to do is realize that Black folks will never be seen as equal citizens and learn the way this finicial system works ,the laws and so forth and be smarter than the average immigrant that sneaks into the country. We need to stop worrying about rappers actors and sports players and yes cut out the pimp and ho attitude, its plain retarded. Mos Def could have picked a better time to relay his message. We have to change this sytem within as MLK did. The Government keeps showing you that they r not for you this is why young folk have to be able to learn the law and use it against them. Most battles are won in court.
