Road Show: Neo-Soul Style

By Karu F. Daniels, AOL Black Voices

Tonight, the Heineken Red Star Soul series kicks off in Philadelphia at the Theater of the Living Arts.

Featuring performances by Floetry, Goapele, Raheem DeVaughn, Emily King, Chrisette Michele, Claudette Ortiz and Ryan Toby, the show is the official start of a multi-city concert, three-month long jaunt celebrating and recognizing emerging and established artists and individuals who have blazed independent paths to  success in the soul music category.

According to publicist Paula Witt, the  idea behind RSS is to provide a platform for  the artists and to allow Heineken to give its  first ever Independent  Achiever Award to someone in each city who has had a major impact o the soul  music scene but has not been recognized.

Entertainment attorney James Elam is the recipient of the Philadelphia honors.

The concerts (info listed below) will be an invitation-only music experience and feature performances by soul music's established and emerging artists including Angie Stone, Raphael  Saadiq, Lyfe Jennings, Amel Larrieux, Bilal,  Goapele, Leela James, Robin Thicke and Dwele, along with the above-mentioned acts and others.

"Heineken Red Star Soul lends a spotlight to performers who are  inspiring a generation with their aspirational spirit and undeniable talent,"  said Heineken brand director Andy Glaser. "We're proud to share  this premium experience and these talented performers with our consumers and  to provide a forum to showcase rising talents in soul music. Red Star Soul is  another example of Heinekens long-term commitment to bring original and  innovative music experiences to our consumers."
