'The Wire' Remains Intact

By Karu F. Daniels, AOL Black Voices

Today, HBO announced that it will renew the critically acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning drama series 'The Wire' for its fifth season.

At last Thursday night's Big Apple premiere and after-party for the new season, most of the cast and crew members didn't know the fate of the hit television show.

The David Simon-created show officially kicked off its 13-episode fourth season last Sunday, Sept. 10, and debuts new episodes Sunday nights (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT)

"David Simon and his remarkable team have created a riveting and thought-provoking series that's unlike anything else on TV," said HBO Entertainment President Carolyn Strauss.

With drugs, murder, sex and inner-city politics as a backdrop, season four of 'The Wire' centers on the lives of four young boys as they traverse adolescence in the drug-saturated streets of West Baltimore.

The new episodes of the series examine their world through the theme of education, asking viewers to consider the world that awaits these boys, and to consider further the American commitment to equal opportunity.

According to an HBO spokesperson, the fifth and concluding season will examine the role of the mass media within the city.

I LOVE "THE WIRE", IT GIVES A LOOK AT TRUE LIFE DEALINGS NO MATTER WHAT LEVEL OR CITY ITS IN.   THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENES (WRITERS, DIRECTORS, AND PRODUCERS) HAVE MADE SURE OF THE REALISM INVOLVED IN THE SHOW.  I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO ENJOYING THE REST OF THIS SEASON AND THE FINAL, ALTHOUGH I WILL HOPE FOR A 6TH, 7TH ETC....  THE ACTORS BRING SO MUCH STYLE TO THE SCREEN IN THE ROLES THEY PLAY, THEY MAKE YOU FORGET ANYTHING ELSE THEY MAY HAVE DONE BEFORE.
