SEAN 'DIDDY' COMBS: And He Told Us That He Won't Stop
By Karu F. Daniels, AOL Black Voices
It's really amazing.
The Hip Hop Personality Formerly Known As Puffy has worked his magic on the masses once again.
'Press Play,' the latest musical collection from Sean 'Diddy' Combs is garnering widespread critical acclaim.
The hip-hop hodgepodge which, literally, features a who's who of today's pop music landscape (Jamie Foxx,Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, Big Boi, Pussycat Dolls, Cee-Lo Green, Nas, Keyshia Cole, Brandy, Timbaland and many more) is getting high marks.
I have my qualms with the Big Apple tabloid 'The New York Post,' but Diddy sure doesn't.
In a four-star review, the Rupert Murdoch paper proclaims "Musically, there isn't a dud on the 19-track disc... The CD takes wild and welcome swings between Diddy's raps, vocals by an all-star roster of R&B and pop singers, and innovative beats designed by an equally elite squad of producers."
I'll agree with some of that.
Meanwhile, the industry-friendly 'Entertainment Weekly' called 'Press Play': "the year's best-produced album."
Not sure if they heard Aguilera's 'Back To Basics,' but hey -- we all have our own opinions.
The 'Washington Post' says "everything on this album is big. Big fanfares, big drums, big sounds... the ideas are bigger... His acute ear and rich sonic vocabulary serve him well throughout 'Press Play.'"
'Newsday' predicts that "Press Play" will "spawn hit singles deep into next year," and AOL Music raves that the album is "the most danceable hip-hop record in years!"
Well alrighty then.
Even the definitive rap website Allhiphop.com awarded the opus four stars, noting that "The album solidifies the return of Bad Boy Entertainment and represents a new age for the hip-hop mogul."
The Bad Boy founder and infamous hip-hop superstar swoons and croons on the production-heavy set, which isn't as bad as I thought it would be to be honest.
While AOL Black Voices Super Producer Angela Bronner is loving the Mario Winans collaboration, "Through The Rain (She Told Me)," my two faves are Diddy's edgy ditty with Keyshia Cole on the Kelis-esque "Last Night" and the his effort with the two rappers I am compared to most (for a variety of reasons I choose not to divulge): "Everything I Love" featuring Nas and Cee-Lo.
What are your favorites? AOL is offering a drama-free and cost-free listen to this 'Press Play' (through the weekend). So check it out.
I would love to know what you think about it.
