Feeling Happy

ROSHUMBA: Still Working It

By Karu F. Daniels, AOL Black Voices

Her name means "beautiful" in Swahili and during her 1990s catwalk heyday, the camera was in love with the beautiful black fashion model known the world over as Roshumba.

And just like a few of her contemporaries (Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell), the statuesque beauty is still finding success beyond the strut.

Roshumba (legally known as Roshumba Williams) is gearing up for, yet, another close-up -- as a celebrity judge of the Oxygen Network's new hair competition series 'Tease.'

Hosted by soap opera starlet Lisa Rinna, the half-hour show --debuting on Jan. 10-- is sort of like the Food Networks 'Iron Chef' but with hair.

"A series big on hair cuts and bold personalities, each Tease episode will feature two up-and-coming hair stylists as they face-off in an outrageous, Olympics-style tournament,' is how the production notes described it.

After watching 'Hair Trauma,' Ellin LaVar's wild romp of a reality show on the WE Network (thanks for turning me on MV), 'Tease' may be just as appetizing.

Roshumba may just be the perfect fit for this series -- she is one of the few fashionistas who can don a short do and look even more beautiful than ones with all the hair, heels and attitude.  Legend has it that she insisted for a more natural look, while modeling.

An accomplished author (1999's 'Complete Idiot's Guide To Modeling'), the Chicago native --formerly married to 'CSI' hunk Gary Dourdan--  served as a judge on last year's televised 'Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model Search."

She, herself, appeared in the coveted pages of the periodical in the 1990s -- after being discovered by legendary fashion designer Yves St. Laurent on the streets of Paris.

Sorry Folks. I dont hate i just dont feel the need to have a parade down 5th ave everytime somebody Black does something that they are SUPPOSED to do.!  its 2007 and i have long since gotten past that point of overjoy everytime a Negro does something. I mean i am always "happy" for someone who is doing their thing White or Black. However I dont feel the slave's pride everytime somebody Black gets a job. SO WHAT.!!  I just had a baby a couple months ago, did you all wish me good luck, did someone blog about me, No!.. You know why, because none of you give a fawk because outside of my family its NO BIG DEAL... Just Like Roshumba on this show... NO BIG DEAL.!!! I'd musch rather see her on the runway at this point.. that would impress me.!
P.S you all are quick to call someone a "hater" just because they go all gaga over something. I s everyone with a different opinion a " Hater"?..
    Stank ya very much.

This is really strange but I have spoken swahili all my life as a native speaker and have never heard of the word "Roshumba". The swahili word for beautiful is "urembo" or used as a name is "mrembo" -meaning beautiful one. The other word used mostly to describe objects that look good is "nzuri" or used to describe a person "mtu mzuri" -that is -a good person -but is never used as a name. Can anybody else please enlighten me on this word Roshumba as a swahili word.???
