TYRESE: Oh No, Say It Isn't So…

By Karu F. Daniels, AOL Black Voices

Just a few years back, at the height of his career (platinum selling R&B albums, hyped up movie projects) Tyrese was all the rave.

Now the Watts, California born bad boy is causing one -- apparently.

TMZ.com is reporting an exclusive story that the J Records recording star (legally known as Tyrese Gibson) allegedly has a physical altercation with his pregnant girlfriend early this morning.

"TMZ has learned that police are conducting a criminal investigation into allegations…"

Whoa!!!

"Police sources tell us that Tyrese's live-in girlfriend claimed that the two got into a heated argument around 5:30 AM at their Los Angeles home," the dishy website reported this afternoon. "According to our sources, paramedics responded after Tyrese allegedly struck the woman, who is three months pregnant, twice and then drove away from the scene."

Gibson, a former spokesperson for Coca Cola and Guess brands, has starred in a string of gritty, urban movies including John Singleton's 'Baby Boy,' '2 Fast 2 Furious' and last summer's 'Waist Deep.' He also served as host of 'MTV Jams Countdown' and released his latest music project, 'AlterEgo' last month, which sold more than 115,000 copies in its first week of release.

His platinum-selling self-titled debut album in 1998 was released on RCA Records, and garnered him an American Music Award for Favorite New Artist.  His 2001 sophomore album, '2000 Watts,' went gold and his 2002 third R&B album, 'I Wanna Go There,' reached platinum status.

Tyrese will star in the sci-fi action movie 'Transformers' due out for release this year. A drama, titled 'Luke Cage,' with Oscar nominee Terence Howard attached has also been announced.

During that heyday the then chisel-chest crooner would've been a great spokesmodel for any brand of "Wife Beater" tank top t-shirts.

Now it appears that he took the term to the next level and may be branded one.

So not a good look.

His representatives did not respond to The BV Newswire by deadline.

I enjoyed watching "Waist DeeP'.  Ithat was the first movie that I ever watch with Tyrese. I thouht  that he was a great actor and the part was very touching to me about  his determination to rescue his son.  It doen't look good on him to hit  a woman and commit domestic voilence.  I truely hope that he will get some kind of treatment for that, and I hope that it never happen again.

Is it that bad Tyrese? Just walk away, never hit a woman carrying a baby. You look good and all  and no matter how much a woman buck at you like she is a man,NEVER LAY HANDS! It's no excuse for that! Get your life together man, you know better!

As one poster already said: a person's social status or celebrity is never an excuse for domestic violence.  If you feel the need to support someone accused of it and question the validity of the charges, by all means please do so.  However, please take the time to also address the possibility that the accused DID commit the crime.  Police corruption is a possibility, but using that theory as a defense for Tyrese is doing an injustice to the woman who could have been abused.  It's also an injustice to abused women everywhere and does nothing but promote domestic violence in our community by encouraging people to always blame someone else: the police, the "crazy" girlfriend, etc.
