MY BOY JACK

I just finished watching this movie on PBS and had to post about how touching it was. It's a story about Jack Kipling the son of the famous writer Rudyard Kipling and how his family dealt with him being in WWI and ultimately dying in battle. Although this takes place in the year 1915, watching it was like looking at any family of today that has a loved one involved in the war. It was very moving, very honest even had me crying at times and also made it even more clear to me how war is the same today as it was any day of any year. If you happen to check your listing and see that this is on again I think it would be worth watching.

In September 1915, Jack Kipling was killed in action. He died in the pouring rain, unable to see a thing. He had been in France for three weeks. Jack remained on the list of soldiers "missing believed wounded" for two years. The effect on Rudyard and Carrie was incalculable.

Here is a poem that Kipling wrote in remembrance of his son.

a poem by Rudyard Kipling

“Have you news of my boy Jack?”

Not this tide.
“When d’you think that he’ll come back?”
Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.
“Has any one else had word of him?”
Not this tide.
For what is sunk will hardly swim,
Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.

“Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?”
None this tide,
Nor any tide,
Except he did not shame his kind—
Not even with that wind blowing, and thattide.

Then hold your head up all the more,
This tide,
And every tide;
Because he was the son you bore,
And gave to that wind blowing and that tide!

I'll have to keep my eyes out for it. Sometimes you can rent PBS movies from the Video store as well. I was truly touched by the poem written by Kipling. I can't wait to see this film. (Hugs) Indigo

I am sorry that I missed it. Two people, you and Yasmin, whose taste I admire both liked it so I'm certain that I would have enjoyed it. I shall keep an eye out in case it is shown again.--Sheria
