The Gear Shift

The Audi press conference brings upon the second surreal moment of the show for me. I’m standing about 20 feet away from the stage which is showcasing two silver cars, an S8 and a Q7. The announcer steps off stage right and the music begins – a Euro pop-rock mix that unfortunately is still stuck in my head. Oh but then the fun begins… out of nowhere a group of men and women dressed in black jump and twirl onto stage. While they dance with modern flair and energetic arm movements around the German cars I can’t help but look at them as though they were auditioning for a Banana Republic commercial. And wait, the fun doesn’t stop there, amidst the dancing runway models emerges a real singer to compliment the groovy tunes. Culminating in a full on pop-rock concert, the Audi guys then drive a new S6 onto the stage. Cue the dancers to exit stage left.

Not quirky enough for you? No problem, leave it to the Germans to take it one step further. After the brief introduction of the S6 the second part of the show begins. This time only the female dance troop comes on stage, but, instead of the longer flowing dresses of the previous act, these attractive ladies are now donning skin tight black mini skirts with matching tube tops. Playing on the plasma screens behind them are images of car designers sculpting the curves of the new Audi model. It shouldn’t be surprising to you that not one head turned towards the actual Audi car when the curtains went up, all eyes were still affixed on the lycra. I could have sworn I saw a guy take out a $20 bill and try to make change in singles.
