Well, here we go again....................Life in the jungle, is a life of it's own.  One learns to cope with the mosquitoes, leeches, and 'tag along' vines.  We used an assortment of repellent to ward off the pesky mosquitoes, but, when a leech elects to host on your blood, the only way to rid yourself of it/them, is to burn them off.  If you were to pull one off, the "head" would remain under the skin and a very sore infection would soon appear.  By burning the leech off, it will extract it's head and roll off the skin.  Backtracking, to 1961, while working with the Laotian Army, in the field, three of us found a nice straight tree, for a specific purpose, so we elected to "whack" it down with our machete.  What we were not aware of, was that the mound it was nestled in, was a very large Fire Ant colony.  Quite soon, we had more fire ants on us then anything else.  We immediately made a mad dash for a deep creek a short distance from us.  We all hit the water at the same time, and dove under the surface, scraping the bottom of the stream.  We rid ourselves of the ants, but had all gained a few leeches.  So, there we stood, dripping wet, with our cigarette lighters, burning off the little boogers, that had reached our flesh, which wasn't too many, actually, and we all were quite fortunate that what bites we did receive, were not too severe in nature...................gotta run, back later...................
