This day in history: November 17, 1973
Thirty one years ago today, yet-to-be disgraced President Richard Nixon made the sort of remark people tend to remember:
President Nixon told a group of newspaper executives tonight that he had never "profited from public service." He added: "I've earned every cent. I'm not a crook."
He should've said " I'm not the stealing-money kind of crook; I'm more of a conversation-recording, political opponent-bugging, burglary-ordering, enemies list-drawing up, eating Chinese food not just with chopsticks but in the company of an actual Chinese person kind of crook."
Nobody would've remembered all that.
