Tibetan Refugee Welfare Centre
Following the dramatic escape of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to India in 1959, around 85,000 Tibetans followed suit to escape the violent and brutal military suppression being executed by the army of the Peoples Republic of China Army in the Tibetan homeland. This refugee centre in Darjeeling, India at a site known as "Hill Side" was one of the earliest established on October 2nd 1959. Driven out of their homeland into a totally different environment and without any knowledge of the langaugae, customs and social institutions of the countries where they sought refuge, the long term rehabilitation of the refugees posed inumerable difficulties.
