The Semi-Dream
What do you call those dreams that you have that keep you from sleeping. I refer to those thoughts that go round and round in your head at night when you'd rather sleep. Sometimes they are your problems, things you have to deal with in your daily life, your worries, but sometimes they are silly made up knotty problems your brain is trying to solve, over and over and over.
They are not dreams, but you cannot control them, and they are as unrational as dreams. I used to call them the "tapes" because they went over and over and I could not erase them.
For example, last night for hours I struggled with an imaginary problem. Franklin Roosevelt, loaded down with the cares of millions of soldier fighting and dying WWII gets a note in his persoal mail. A White House cook has been fired, without explanation, after years of planning the menus, preparing state dinners, endless hours being ready day and night to serve dignitaries who need to see the president. She appeals to the president for the reason she was summarily terminated.
He was not even aware she had been fired, since he is isolated from day to day operation of the staff. He takes time to inquire. He finds that she was fired for getting a ticket for speeding and drunken driving in Washington D.C. But he also finds that it was a foolish mistake. The drunk driver was a person with a somewhat, not exactly, similar name. who was not even the same age or sex
The agent who filed the report was reduced in rank and reassigned to a division far from Washington. Roosevelt apologises to the cook and orders her reinstated, but she declines. She has gone to work for more money and less stress.
My dream/semi-dream for what seemed hours was about the letters and the situation. It was not a dream but was a night, sleep depriving thought process. I wonder what you call these semi-nightmares.
