Update on the 6 Nations Caledonia Land Reclamation
Adrian Jacobs - sagoulie@yahoo.com
May 28, 2006

To all my good friends

I am happy to report that calm has come to Caledonia for the time being. Native barricades came down for a few hours on Monday but when the resdients (and outside agitators) established a human barricade violence erupted and the Native barricade went back up. The rest of this email is my account of Monday's events.

Today, Wednesday May 24th, I am happy to report that the Native barricade on the main road in front of the land being reclaimed by Six Nations is down, the electric power that was out in a large region is now back on.

Hopefully negotiations will resume with the traditional Confederacy chiefs leading the way for our people. The Federal government need to rise to its reponsibilities and deal with this land issue. So far there is a lot of blameshifting on the part of the Canadian government.

Monday was supposed to be a happy day to recognize our Nationhood in Independence Day celebrations and commeoration of our relationship with the Queen as her allies. It was not to be that way. I went to the Bread and Cheese Day festivities at the fairgrounds in Ohsweken at the Six Nations Reserve (my home community) with my two youngest children in the late morning. I met many friends and relatives there and was enjoying the day. I went to my parents place and after hearing of trouble in Caledonia lef t my children with their grandparents and headed to Caledonia at about 1 PM. Many of my relatives, neighbours, friends, and some church members were in the crowd of hundreds of Native people. It seemed that an equal number of non-Native Caledonia protesters were being held back by many police.

I saw one skirmish when people from the Caledonia protest came around the police into a field on the east side of the highway. Many young Native men rose to the threat and met the taunters and fists flew, pepper spray sprayed, and after a few minutes the sides were separated. A tense standoff seemed to not be getting any worse at about 5 PM so I left to take my children home and make sure they were fed and then I returned to Caledonia. I got back about 7:30 PM, and shortly after, one of the Native leaders said "they are coming" (I understood that he meant the Ontario Provincial Police) in about two hours.

Men were called to the front line and I joined my brother-in-law and two nephews on the front line. I stood for five hours in the cold weather that night. Riot police came in and re-inforced the police cordon around the Caledonia non-Native protest group. After Native people set up a flood light pointed at the Caledonia crowd the people on the Caledonia side cheered when the OPP brought in two more flood lights. They were dismayed that the lights were turned on them and would not let the rental company trucks leave back through their human barricade. I watched the news reports of Monday night's confrontation and they made it sound like the police were brought in to hold back the Native people when, in reality all the police there, including the riot police, were in place to keep the non-Native Caledonia crowd from getting out of hand.

I was very heartened when a cousin of mine came forward to stand on the front line. H e is a Christian and a member of a an evangelical church at Six Nations where other of my cousins attend. He is a very strong man with a vice like handshake. He is a high steel iron worker who has battled cancer and endured chemo-therapy. I told him I was glad he was on our side.

My brother-in-law asked me earlier in the evening, "What are you going to do if it turns violent?" I told him, "I will defend whoever I need to defend." One other time when I headed to Caledonia a friend of my daughter asked if I was going to bust heads. I told her, "No. But if anyone tries to hurt a woman, a child or an old man I will do what I need to do." It was an anxious evening for me and others there as we never knew when something bad would happen. I told my teenage sons, "There are some battles worth fighting and this is one of them." I have prayed through to a note of victory and am ready to do whatever else I need to do.

I believe that the essence of the Kingdom of God is advocacy for the vulnerable. I would not be doing what I am doing unless I was sure God is with me. Actually I am more concerned with being on God's side than I am with pleasing people and doing what they expect of me, Christians included.

One cousin asked me what I was doing way down there (on the front line). I told him "It is where I belong." My children's dignity and future are worth standing up for. I have no weapon but prayer, the name of Jesus, and the strength God has given me. I will use everything I have for our people. People have wondered if I am afraid of dying and I can't but think of a line from a movie, "All men die. Few men really live."

Your prayers are so important. Thank you for standing with me and the Six Nations people. Our greatest streng th is our story. Thank you for sharing it with others who will pray.

Adrian Jacobs

Hau kola na tiyospaye (Hello friends & extended family),

Welcome to all new Circle members! Each section of the Circle of Nations newsletter is written 'facing' one of the four sacred winds, beginning with the east, then the south, west and finally the north. This is to honor the old ways. It is to teach and to help us to focus and find the center. I have designed the Native Circle website in the same spirit. I welcome you all to the Circle....

I want to begin with a special thanks to all who attended my Come to the Fire concerts in the last couple weeks. The show is everything I dreamed it would be, and I am so glad that so many wonderful people got to experience it with me. It truly is a journey, this show, and I am honored to have shared this journey with you. Wopila!

EAST - Wiyohinyanpata - Yellow (Four Winds)
Balance and Perspective, the givers of peace and contentment....
In all the multi-faceted layers of the things I teach, share and offer in my concerts, books and in one-on-one exchanges, there are two concepts which are anchors to all the others - balance and perspective. For me, regardless of what we experience in this life, an understanding and a peace can be realized if we filter all of our life experiences through the wisdom which is found in the concepts of balance and perspective.
One evening I was at a friend's place, sitting around the table with about a dozen people. A particular individual began to badger me, saying I was setting a ‘bad example’ for ‘healthy living’ with my diet choices. A friend came to my rescue with the following statement which I will never forget.... She said, “Hey, I know ALL about balance in your diet, and I can sum it up in two words - Ben & Jerry (Ice cream).” I never forgot that, and not because I wanted to be right, or because I want an excuse to eat ice cream, but because it really was a statement of balance and perspective. Each human being balances uniquely. That is, no two people ever have exactly the same life equilibrium. What this means is that there will always be things one does that another does differently. Some bodies are equipped for vegetarianism, where others would not be healthy as vegetarians. The reasons for these realities are mainly biological, emotional, spiritual and social. This applies not only to what we eat, but to how we respond to the world we live in, the choices we make, the people we like, our chosen spiritual path and so on. Now this does not mean that we have no choice in the matter, for we do. What it does mean is that many of our choices are affected at least in some way by our biological, emotional, spiritual and social realities. And that is okay! Those things are part of what makes us unique and diverse and special! The point here is that it is never one person’s place to insist that another person ‘balance’ the same way they do. I do, however, feel that it is always a good practice to be open enough to try new things and hear new ideas. In this way, we can avoid becoming too narrow with our thoughts and our daily choices, and remain open to possibilities for growth and enlightenment. And by the way, ‘balance’ means that being ‘healthy’ is not only about eating, thinking and doing the ‘right’ things, it is about living! It is about chocolate just as much as it is about broccoli! And it’s about dancing and taking risks just as much as it is about being careful and conscientious. And it’s about being weak just as much as it is about being strong. So live your life! And live it in balance.
Perspective is a powerful tool for achieving balance, and thus peace and contentment in life. I love the song “From a Distance” by Bette Midler. Especially the words: ‘From a distance, you look like my friend....’ This entire song is all about the peace giving power of perspective. When we are able to step back, take a wider look, a look from farther back, we are able to better able to understand things. We become more wide visioned and far sighted in our thinking, and can even catch a small glimpse of what Wakantanka, our Creator, sees. In gaining this ‘from a distance’ perspective, we can tune into the bigger picture, which always helps us to see more of what is going on. Sometimes there are reasons for things which we do not fully see until we step back to gain perspective and realize that all of life’s experiences are intertwined and connected to one another. And sometimes when we look at things from a distance, we discover a profound truth.... that sometimes the reasons are a mystery. And that alone, is a humbling perspective.
Seek perspective and balance in your life, and you may find that you see the world in a new light, and that you are more at ease with it, the people in it, and yourself....

SOUTH - Itokagata - Red (Red Earth)
A word from Peggy....

We have just come off of our first full weekend of "Come to the Fire" concerts and it was absolutely incredible!! CD is incredible and now we are working on publishing the book and producing the video... hopefully available by the fall retreat!
As you can discern I am in the work mode, but it is just cause I am so excited to share all this cool stuff with you. I know many of you are planning on attending the Springfield Mo "Come to the Fire" concert and we will just have a great big PARTY!!
Another cool thing, we raised $300 for Heifer International at our concerts this weekend. We will buy a goat, some trees and some bees for some needy families. It is good to help out people who, across this planet, don't worry about gas prices but worry about having enough food for their children to eat. The more we give the easier life gets!! So just keep on giving.
I love you all!!
Peace,
Peggy
Red Earth

WEST - Wiyohpeyata - Black or Blue (We are STILL Here!)
Preserving the old ways....
I spoke with my friend Joseph Marshall III last night. He is one of very, very few Lakota people who still know how to make bows and arrows in the old traditional Lakota way. We talked about how important it is that we preserve and retain these old skills, customs and concepts. When a given custom or art is lost, so much more is lost than most could imagine. For with it goes not only the skill to make such items, but the philosophies and concepts which contribute so greatly to the culture and traditional thought of a people. For example, when one thinks of bows and arrows, we might think of them as a weapon for hunting or for battle. We may even conjure up images of Indians on horseback, using old handmade bows and arrows. But what most would not know is that the bow and the arrow was, and is a great teacher. While making traditional Lakota bows and arrows, one learns deep lessons of interconnectedness, of the powerful gift of struggle which makes us incredibly strong, of the need for respect for the flow of life, and lessons of balance, endurance and patience. These lessons are only the beginning. Much more is learned as more bows and arrows are made, and as they are used. It is this wisdom which is the greatest loss if these skills and concepts are not continued and passed on. I am privileged to know a handful of people who I consider ‘keepers’ of these old ways. I am happy and humbled to be a ‘keeper’ of an old way myself - the way of the hokagapi, the flute. The importance of preserving these old ways is much more than just for historical reference or nostalgia. It is my belief, and the belief of many others, that the wisdom of these old ways may very well be a key to our ultimate survival on this planet. Equally important is the fact that the world we live in today is in dire need of the values, morals and spiritual insight which is found in these old ways. It is for these reasons that I am honored to learn what skills and concepts I can of the old ways, and to pass on what I know and what I learn. The old ways are not really ‘old’ at all....

NORTH - Waziyata - White (Words of Wisdom)
Some thoughts from ol Two-Hawks here....

Never allow anger to steal your grace

Pride is a good thing, so long as it is not chumming with ego

Just because you can, does not always mean you should

Convince yourself to see the silver lining

Be thankful for the little things which, if taken away, are not so little

Experience the liberation of real forgiveness

Never, ever curse the wind

May Wakantanka encircle you and yours with faith to believe, hope for the future, and love for all....

As always, in the spirit of mending the sacred hoop of the nations of the world
Your Oglala Lakota friend and brother,
John Two-Hawks
http://www.nativecircle.com/
http://www.johntwohawks.com/
Reprinting of this Circle of Nations newsletter is encouraged! All I ask is that it be printed in its entirety, with no changes, and that I be given proper credit, unless I have otherwise okayed it. Wopila (great thanks)!

Stolen papers offered to Caledonia developer – for a priceLast Updated Fri, 05 May 2006 12:35:58 EDT

CBC News

The developer of land occupied in a native protest in southern Ontario says it has been offered the return of important documents looted from the site – if it pays for them.

INDEPTH: Caledonia land claim: a timeline

And an insurance company refused to pay for computers, tools and other items stolen from Henco Industries' office on the site near Caledonia – because it considered the looting to be an "act of insurrection" against the government.

Henco Industries had been using a model home on the land as its corporate office. It was looted on April 20 after the Ontario Provincial Police launched an abortive raid to clear out protesters, mostly members of the nearby Six Nations reserve who occupied the site on Feb. 28.

Michael Bruder, a lawyer for Henco Industries, told CBC News that he has received numerous calls from a man who said he was a middleman for the looters.

"I got a call directed to me two weeks ago from an individual who advised he was the intermediary for the protesters who had the documents, and [asked] what price were we willing to pay for the return of those documents," Bruder said on Friday.

"I told him that certainly we weren't prepared to pay because [the documents] were stolen.

Bruder said corporate records, archeological reports, computers, tools, furniture and equipment went out the door. But the missing records were the most important because without them, the company has been unable to file corporate or personal tax returns.

OPP investigation

The owners of Henco, Don and John Henning, approached provincial police officers on the site after they saw television footage of the looting, Bruder said.

He added: "Basically the response was 'We can't do anything because we can't get into the site.' So they said to go to the Indian leadership."

However, the OPP said Friday that it would be officially investigating the case.

No comment from Six Nations chief

Bruder said he also contacted representatives of the Six Nations reserve, including Chief Allen McNaughton, asking them to look into the case. He said he never received a reply.

CBC News contacted McNaughton's office but the chief was not available for comment.

Bruder said the company did not initially want to go any further with the police out of worry that it might exacerbate an already tense situation.

"Our clients have always been interested in a peaceful resolution and are reluctant to do anything that would result in the situation not being resolved peacefully," Bruder told CBC News.

"[But] my client's frustration level has reached an all-time high."

'Never seen a claim of insurrection in an insurance policy'

The company has been further frustrated because it can't get any money from the insurance company to replace the looted items, Bruder said.

He said the insurance company had declared the incident to be an "act of insurrection" against the government and therefore not claimable.

"I can safely say in 20 years of practising law, I have never seen a claim of insurrection in an insurance policy," Bruder said.

Aboriginal demonstrators occupied the site to stop Henco Industries from constructing 250 homes on the 40-hectare site. They say the land was stolen from the Six Nations more than 200 years ago.

The province says aboriginals gave up the land in 1841 to make way for a new highway, an agreement a Six Nations spokesperson said was only meant to be a lease.

Six Nations filed a land-claim suit over the area in 1999.

Freedom is a hardy plant and must flower in equality and brotherhood.
~
For as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom — for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.
From The Declaration of Arbroath 1320.
~
After Hitler’s expansive
Holocaust the world swore never to allow it again, and yet, here we are
in the twenty-first century and everywhere in this world someone is
being killed, beaten, imprisoned, raped, and pillaged because someone
else thought them inferior.

Caledonia developers angry about stolen property

Updated Fri. May. 5 2006 9:38 AM ET

Canadian Press

CALEDONIA, Ont. -- Developers embroiled in a land dispute in Caledonia, Ont., say they are "extremely angry and frustrated" with unsuccessful efforts to have looted property returned.

Henco Industries is building homes on 40 hectares of contested land which Six Nations members have occupied since Feb. 28, arguing the land belongs to them.

Henco's lawyer, Michael Bruder, says files, computers, furniture and construction equipment worth an estimated $200,000 were looted from an office and model home on the site on April 20.

Bruder says several requests to the Six Nations Confederacy to have the property returned have gone unanswered.

He also says someone who identifies himself as an intermediary for the protesters has indicated he would arrange for the return of some office records if the price was right. But Bruder says no dollar figure was mentioned in the demand.

Losses from the looting are not covered by insurance, says Bruder, because they occurred as a result of what the insurance company calls "an act of insurrection."

The aboriginal standoff escalated April 20, when provincial police raided the site and arrested 16 protesters. Police were pushed back later that same day after hundreds more protesters arrived on the scene from a nearby reserve.

The aboriginals then set up blockades across the main road through the town and into the disputed territory.

Friday morning, and I just wanted to touch base with everyone. things are quiet around the camp. we are currently in the process of re-organizing, re-structuring, etc. so that we're not all over the place. the women are in the process of getting the information organized and hopefully (?) we will have a daily report coming out from the site. At least that is my personal goal, perhaps early evening, maybe even once in the morning and once at night. the Caledonia residents are getting a bit frustrated, not only with us, but there is alot of anger toward police for not getting us out of there, and now they want to block our roads on the rez, stop accepting status cards etc. it really is alot of garbage and i understand their frustration, but it was clearly stated by my daughter who wrote in to one of their blogs, "the racism is not new, it has just been hidden better until this incident" something along those lines anyway. and i agree with her. as do many. not all of them feel that way, but it is not uncommon in any of the cities towns and townships along the grand river, and it shouldn't even surprise us, they were taught their history and believe us to be just like them......but it is their spirit that is stirring and questioning their truth, and that is where the anger comes from. it is easier to be angry and racist than to admit that they might be wrong and there might be truth to what we are saying. so, have compassion in your hearts for those people, don't react to their anger and if you're going to the site tonight, lets stay by the front gate, we'll have a sing, and let's ignore their behavior. The media is just waiting for us to react and give them a show, we need to stay proud and allow those people to have their own say, in their own way, without even acknowledgeing it. As far as them stopping us from shopping in "their" town, quite frankly, if they don't want our business, caledonia may soon turn out to be a ghost town without it. will touch base soon. Hazel

Police were ready for trouble but tempers remained in check at the aboriginal standoff in Caledonia last night.

More than 500 residents gathered last night to once again demand an end to the blockade of the community's main street by First Nations protesters.

But dozens of provincial police officers stood between the residents and the blockade to keep the peace.

On Monday night, residents infuriated by the blockade rushed a police line surrounding the barrier.

Some hurled insults and screamed at the aboriginal protesters to leave the area.

The occupation at a half finished housing development began two months ago.

Six Nations protesters say it's their land.

But Canada and Ontario say the property was sold in 1841 to make way for a highway.

See today's Hamilton Spectator for more background on the standoff

CALEDONIA, Ont. -- Hundreds of Caledonia, Ont., residents crowded a police barricade Friday night discontented by a native roadblock on the town's main street.

Two busloads of Ontario Provincial Police, lined up in front of cruisers, separated the more than 200 locals -- some blowing air horns, others waving Canadian flags -- from an equal number of Six Nations natives who have occupied a subdivision development about 30 kilometres south of Hamilton since Feb. 28.

Businesses were shut down early Friday, and locals began to gather near the blockade about 6 p.m.

Natives claim a 40-hectare property, for which developer Henco Industries has the legal land certificate, was wrongfully taken from them in the 18th century.

Anger between the two groups peaked Monday night with the arrest of two people after Caledonia residents stormed a police barricade.

Days earlier, violence erupted on the disputed land when police raided the site and arrested 16 men. Natives from across the country flocked to the site, lighting tire fires and throwing a van over a bridge.

Woodrow Sparks has lived in Caledonia for 34 years, and wants the army called in to open the road.

"There are two laws in this country: laws for the rich and laws for minorities. We're in between," he said.

Andie Ingram, who owns a home less than one kilometre from the blockade, said he doesn't oppose the natives or their right to protest, but does not agree his rights should be infringed.

Osiyo everyone,

I am disappointed, but not surprised that the Meade County Commissions unanimously ruled in favor of Mr. Jay Allen, he was granted his liquor license. As we all know, he has proposed to build a campground, 22,500 square foot bar, 155,000 square foot asphalt parking lot, and an amphitheater to seat 30,000 near Bear Butte.

Hopefully there will be a way to challenge this decision. From what I heard on the radio here in South Dakota he will be starting ASAP in moving forward with his plans.

It sounds like there was about 200 people at the protest gathering, which was very peaceful even after the decision was announced at 5:00.
