I had three people for orientation. I also took Chloe in the run. Wish I had more time to be with the dogs, but I had to work at Grateful Paw.

We only had 3 dogs to test today and all passed! April is the female beagle I found two weeks ago roaming the street. Martha is a young mastif female. Snow is a pretty white pit mix.

I also walked Jagger, Patrick and Rachel.

Sunday, April 20, 2008

It was a 12 hour day with the animals.

5a-9a - Feed, medicate and clean at the cat shelter.

9a-12n - Dogs

Trevor prefers not to be with cats. Trevor is a lab/pit mix (male). I took Jagger, Chloe, Bonnie and Charlie into the run today.

Our new dogs are Trevor, Chandler (M - weimeraner mix), Rachel (F - shiba inu), Duncan (M -lab mix) and Zoe (F - rottie mix)

Kelton was adopted by one of our volunteers. I am so happy. I thought someone got him first but she had come back later yesterday and I didn't see her.

12n-4:10p - Adoptions at the cat shelter (1 - Kendra, the 7 month old kitten I took to the emergency vet a few weeks ago... she's happy, healthy and in a new home now).

We tested a lot of dogs today. It was all a big blur. Some were iffy. Two totally failed (one went for Jane's ankle and one for her hand - thank God she wasn't injured). It's been bad with dogs failing their tests. No one knows how hard it is to see that.

Kelton, the black lab, was adopted today. It looks like Toby may be adopted soon by the mother of one of our new volunteers. It is always good to see dogs going home... the sooner, the better.

I'm actually writing this on Saturday, April 19 because I forgot. I used the run and took Wiley out. He is absolutely adorable. He plays ball and is such a good boy.

I wish I remembered who else I took out. Seems lately there is so much going on and so little time to do everything.

This was quite a day.

It started out at 5A when I found a sweet female beagle wandering in the street on Deposit Road. I used my slip lead and walked her back to the cat shelter (dog shelter wasn't open and I couldn't find a number to contact to get someone to take her in). Later I found out three young guys found her wandering near my house on Commack Road. They called the police and it was the police who told them to either put her over the fence at the Huntington Town Shelter (which is out of district from where the dog was found) or leave her in the back of one of the town pickups. They left her in the pickup. Almost 5 hours later I found her wandering. She's lovely, probably not that young, and let me handle her.

I had another orientation with two new (and very nice) volunteers.

I also got to walk Wiley and took Toby and Chloe into the run.

What a busy day!

Tested and passed: Gracie, Giselle, Wiley, Linus.

Failed - a golden who had bitten someone already (we were asked to test the dog because the story was in question).

I didn't get a chance to walk any dogs myself but that's ok. I got plenty of exercise and I love my Saturdays.

I walked Jagger and Sally. I spent quality time with Lora and Jack.

There was a woman with a black lab puppy (about 7 mo old is my guess) who is interested in Jagger. I'm hoping she'll bring her puppy down on Saturday to meet him.

Lora is very interested in human affection. She seems to enjoy a good massage (gee, how is it she engaged me... the licensed massage therapist...what a smart girl!).

Jack can be so lovely when he quiets down (not really the norm for a Jack Russell terror... I mean terrier <grin>). He knows sit and down and likes squeakies. But once he starts barks, his attention span shrinks to zero.

Big news.. Philip went home with a wonderful couple. I am thrilled! PS.. I learned that he has an outtie belly button (didn't know dogs could have outties, but I guess they can).

I walked Jagger, Sally and Lora.

I also showed Chloe (hopefully this guy will come back Saturday with his dad and they'll be able to take Chloe), Emily and Patrick.

I even got Jack to do a sit and a down plus be quiet in his cage! Man, he must have been exhausted to do that! We're talking about a jack russell terrier... they are usually bouncing, boundless energy.

First order of the day was a bath for my buddy Philip. I let him out in the run to relieve himself and get some exercise. He was so good in the bath. It was amazing! All dogs should be so nice about it. Since he's getting his "spa treatment" (aka, neuter and rabies shot and if he does have an umbilical hernia that should get fixed while he's out cold too), he won't be able to have another bath for a week or two. This way he's already clean.

I had another orientation. We're doing well getting people interested. I hope this gal comes back. There are some new people you know are really good with dogs and you just want them to keep coming. Others you can tell care but this isn't right for them. That's okay too. I love the concern. People should be concerned about animals. Besides, shelters aren't the happiest places and that can be very hard to take. You always have to focus on the good because the sad will kill you if you let it.

I walked Sally and Eliza.
