Ozzie Proves Himself a Bigot

I think we can all agree that Chicago columnist and Around the Horn superstar Jay Mariotti Sucks.  We could also agree (I hope) that the comments Ozzie Guillen made about Mariotti yesterday were way, way (way) out of line:

"What a piece of s*** he is, f****** fag.''

 Oh, sweet irony.

Guillen made these comments in front of about 20 reporters while sitting in the White Sox dugout.  The Chicago Sun-Times’ Greg Couch has the full story, including Ozzie’s pathetic attempt to explain his use of the F-Bomb (and I’m not talking about the four letter kind).

Couch also suggests that Bud Selig should suspend Guillen.  I believe a suspension is a no-brainer.  What if it was a racial slur Ozzie said to some 20 reporters?  I doubt this would be an under-the-radar story.  Clearly, the man is an idiot.  Yes, I often laugh when he shoots his mouth off, but usually I’m not laughing with him, I’m laughing at him.  In this case, however, there is nothing to laugh about.

He is already likely to be suspended for what happened last night, so why not add a few games to that to send a message to Guillen?

UPDATE: The "mainstream" sports sites are finally starting to pick up on this story

I agree with Chris too, what he said was wrong.  And I don't buy the language barrier for a second.  The problem with what he said was we all know fag=homosexual, and he was using it to insult somebody.  He thinks this guy is so awful, he's as bad as a homosexual.
The same week Ozzie puked, Brett Myers smacked his wife around on Boylston St in Boston, and he got to pitch the next day.  My friend asked “Is what Ozzie said worse than what Brett Myers did??”  Of course not, but Ozzie admitted to his sins, and Myers is denying the charges.  I think he did it, but the Phillies have to let the law run it's course, then perhaps look at the evidence themselves before a decision.  But it doesn't look good for Brett, several people from Boylston St called 911 at the same time.
Sorry, back to the point, Ozzie needs to start shutting his mouth.

Nice post, Chris. Thanks for calling foul on homophobes.

This whole thing is not about the club, the manager, its Mariotti's hatred of Jerry Reinsdorf and the owners of the White Sox.

I'm tired of reading the Sun-Times when Mariotti is so negative.  One way to cure Mariotti's negative attitude about the White Sox -- Boycott the Sun-Times! Hurt Mariotti where it hurts in his wallet.  True Ozzie used the wrong word but like he said he was confused about how the word is used.  Ozzie is a hot tempered Venezuelan.  Plus his comments were off the record.  Isnt there ethics in journalism anymore?

What I find pathetic about this is that Bud Selig comes out of hiding for "political correctness" but he won't do a damned thing about steroids---especially Barry Bonds. Selig is the one hiding behind the "mask" because he doesn't want anyone to know that maybe he was bought off by the steroid makers. Ozzie said the wrong thing, but for Selig to act THIS quickly looks like double talk to me---because he has done NOTHING about Bonds. Now is the time Selig---show those same "balls of steel" to the city of San Francisco and Barry Bonds that you have just shown to Chicago and to Ozzie Guillen.
