Yeah, Invincible Is a Better Name

Yesterday we recorded an interview for Sports Bloggers Live with the real deal Vincent Papale.  He's the guy that Marky Mark portrays in Invincible, the latest in Disney's ever growing line of feel good sports movie (see also: Miracle and The Rookie). While consulting wikipedia, our main source of research for SBL guests, we discovered that Mark Wahlberg isn't the first actor to play the role on Papale.

In 1998 a little known actor by the name of Tony Danza played Papale in a made-for-TV movie loosely based on Papale's life called -- get ready for it -- The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon.

According to IMDB, the plot of TGPFGKPP goes a little something like this: "A Philadelphia garbageman who develops his leg muscles from kicking the hydraulic lever on his truck is discovered by the Philadelphia Eagles and signed by them to become a kicker." Oh, and if that's not enough to make you wanna check out this Danza classic, there is a cameo by Chris Berman himself.

So yeah, I have to believe that Invincible is better than this... unless you're looking for unintentional comedy.

I walked off the high school soccer practice field once.... cut across the football practice field... then dashed over and kicked a 30 yard field goal while the real kicker was being yelled at by the coach.

I hadn't figured out that only kickoffs are launched from Tees, although I think HS ball allows them on FGs and PATs. Still... my kick would have been good from 40.

Nevertheless, I saw the real kicker miss one from the same distance before I finished my post-practice Marlboro Light. I'd have tried to get on the football team, but I was getting beaten up enough playing soccer at the time... so I just sorta peaked right there as far as football is concerned.

    Congratulations.

You have the one and only Google search result for the term "TGPFGKPP".
