The Bye Week Blues
As a Redskins fan, I’m having to deal with the two worst words for any NFL fan to hear: Bye Week. All I have to look forward to this Sunday is some sweet fantasy football action, lots of beer, fried food, NFL Sunday Ticket… ok, nevermind, the bye week isn’t all bad, I guess.
So while I have some time away from watching the ‘Skins be pathetic, I thought I’d share an open letter I’ve written to Coach Joe Gibbs. It goes a little something like this:
Dear Gibbs,
Allow me to start by saying that contrary to popular belief, you are a mere mortal. You are not a God. You aren’t even Jesus Christ. You’re just a guy who won three Super Bowls for us before I was old enough to remember. Thanks for that. I mean, when you last won in D.C., I was nine years-old and more interested in building Lego landscapes than in the NFL, so really, your whole legacy doesn’t really reverberate with me. I know it’s shocking, but there are some ‘Skins fans who are seeing you coach for the first time.
As much as everyone wants to blame Snyder, you signed off on everything. All the big free agents, all the traded draft picks, all the big time coordinators/assistant head coaches. Giving Adam Achuletta a $30 million deal with a $5 million bonus was a real doozy. I mean, he’s only the worst safety in the NFL. Well done. But you can’t change that now, Gibbs.
What you can change right now are two very simple things: Your quarterback and your attitude.
Put Jason Campbell in starting after the bye week. Newsflash, Gibbs: The season is over. Maybe it wouldn’t be if you had put Campbell in after the Week 2 total cluster F that was Mark Brunell in Dallas, but hey, you can’t change that now either. And afterall, you promised your buddy Brunell that you’d stick with him. That was smart.
As for your attitude, change it. Now. After each of our five loses this season I have listened to your press conferences. You know, that little speech you give in front of the media each Monday at 4:30 when you try to spin everything into a positive and make endless excuses for your sorry excuse for a NFL team. Stop, please. If I didn’t know better, I’d think we were undefeated just from listening to the first ten minutes of your pressers. How about next time we lose (and trust me, you’ll have plenty of chances to perfect this), you simply stand up there and say, “We got our ass kicked and here’s why and who is responsible.” If I hear you say “Well, all I can tell you is that we’re working long hours and we’re gonna fight our guts out” one more time, I’ll be forced to drive my car into a bridge embankment (Here's a good example of what I'm talking about). Maybe that would be doing myself a favor.
So yeah, that’s it. Some might call this whole letter blasphemy, but like I told you, you are human. You make mistakes… lots of them, but it’s not too late to come to your senses and change some things for the better.
Heart,
-Chris
PS. I still love you in a totally hetero way.

The O is ranked what? 2nd and you call for the QB's head? How is it Marks fault that they use cover two the first half and shut down Manning. Then they stay in cover two even after the adjust after half when everyone in the stadium noted the middle was wide open on every play.
The problem lies with the D and not the O. Williams is the one who shows he's not superman as after several seasons the league catches on to your schemes. Besides, when is Blitz, blitz and blitz some more a scheme?
What does Mark need to put up 40 points a game to cover for a bad D? -
I don't agree with two things.....(a) the season isn't completely over [it is close] and (b) the QB change. With Philly and the Pokes losing, we are still sort of in this thing in the East. We have two with the Eagles and homers with Dallas and the Giants left. All winnable games.
I would like to see Gibbs go up to Al Saunders and say "look, this may be your offense, but this is my team. You ARE going to gameplan THIS way." This way would be more running between the tackles and taking the occassional shot down the field. We do neither, and this offense was successful last season when we did.
Sad to say, but Brunell gives us the best chance to win. He isn't great, but he's running the offense they are giving him. And the fact he gets toasted as the game goes on should be evident to them [it is to me] that Portis, Betts, Cartwright and Duckett need to be utilized to the max. Why have all these freakin' backs and never use them???? Do that after the bye for two weeks. If it doesn't pay off....then just scrap everything and throw Campbell in there.

I agree, the D sucks, but we can't replace the entire defense at this point in the season. We can, however, replace Brunell who is a big part of the problem. If you don't think so, then you just haven't watched the Redskins play this season.
