Feeling Hopeful
Hearing Interpol, "The Specialist"
This is The Show. Brace Yourselves.
This is the first of what will be a series of blogs that are intended to give an exclusive, sure-to-be fascinating, behind the scenes look at AOL's new sports talk radio show, boastfully called "The Show." The thought behind the name is that this is the show for sports. It's a play off the way in which the big leagues are often referred to as "the show." This is the big leagues of sports talk.
The concept of The Show is to create an interactive sports talk show that will be broadcast exclusively over AOL. The Show will be every monday-friday from 12-1 PM, with re-runs and achieves being available 24 hours a day on The Show's homepage. Members will be able to interact with The Show through a number of mediums: IM, email, or telephone. The whole idea is to have The Show feel like a discussion with the members, rather than just a talking head sports show.
The host is D.C. local Jess Atkinson who played football at the University of Maryland and for the Washington Redskins. He went on to work as an on-air TV personality for a couple of different local news stations. He is a motivated guy with loads of unique ideas and high expectations for The Show. Besides that, all you need to know for now is that he has an iBook the size of my desk, and he loves to play with his hair.

This is the best shot of Jess I could find on the Net. To get the full "Jess-Effect," visualize that mug, but with long, flowing locks that never go more than two minutes without a hand running though them.
The Show itself is set to launch on August 23. As Jess says, "Ready or not, here we come." Hopefully we will be ready. We have spent the last couple weeks trying to establish show ideas for the first month or so of The Show. The first week looks like it will be devoted mostly to the Olympics, NFL, and fantasy football. We are, of course, leaving room for the breaking stories thatare sure to occur between now and then.
The first couple weeks are set to be a preliminary type period for The Show. We are all new to radio, so those first shows are serving as the time to get our feet wet and figure out exactly how to run The Show. Around the third week, after we know what works and what doesn't, AOL will be ready to shift the promotion of The Show into high gear to correspond with some big name guests we will have lined up.
This is where I will have to end my maiden voyage into the land of blog. Feel free to respond to any of my blogs throughout the progression of The Show with thoughts, comments, suggestions, hatred, love letters and so on. Soon enough I will include some pictures so you can all see my luxury intern spot here at AOL. Until then, keep it real, and respek The Show.

Looks like a cool place to work. I will have to check out "The Show" for sure. Sports 4ever, baby!

The intern/star idea is a good one. Can you develop a stutter?

I can be brought in for relatively cheap money during sweeps week.

I think you should be a personality on "The Show" as well. I see you as a "Kyle the Intern" from Elliot in the Morning. Jess can send you out on location to practices, games, etc. and check in with you from the studio. Keep up the blog -- I expect to see more entries and your brother better promote it!
