Feeling Chillin'
Hearing the CD player DJ

ashes to ashes, dust to dust

Tonight it's mostly pictures 'cuz I'm bleary-eyed from too much coding and I'm zonked after tonight's rehearsal. It took an hour to figure out that the new parking fee at UCSC will collectively cost us ~$800/year. Moreover, since our treasury is somewhat small, we can only afford to be subsidized 50 cents each per week.

Anyway, onwards. See? we weren't at BMan for long before we got caught up in a "white-out" and lost our "clean"! We "aged" in seconds! This year, the dust storms were practically constant, but seemed less severe than the one we experienced last year (pics 3 - 5).

haydos and I were often out in the desert - far from camp and unable to see our usual navigational markers. We crouched down on the playa, turned our backs to the wind, sat on the base of an unfinished shrine, pondered our options, tried protecting our eyes with cheap plastic goggles, and endured the sting from the fine dust particles flying into us at lightning speed.

Dust storms aren't entirely pleasant, but they do make for some good photography.

Final notes: after reading a short history of blogging on the web (well worth the read!), I went and revised my first journal entry. I embellished it with a few mundane and predictable hyperlinks, none of which are really worth a return trip but there you have it.

I also installed an "RSS reader" which automatically fetches updated RSS feeds - NPR, Salon, CNN, BBC UK, Wired News, coffywoman's blackblog....You get the picture! So you save some time collecting headlines and summaries, but, truth be told, I've spent double the time I've saved reading all the news and views I never would have otherwise discovered! I highly recommend it.
