Circle Of Infinity
by Mathew Reoch
A three-sided circular pattern of hundreds of mosaic eyes peers back at the viewer, who becomes the center of a mirrored pupil. The warped, mirrored interior warps all cognitive boundaries and gives viewers the ability to see infinitely. At night one can see an endless cellular environment.
Doesn't seeing infinitely sound like an incredible super-power??! I choose to see this piece of art as representing the endless possibilities that lay beyond the physical here-and-now Me. Though one can never escape (the reflections of) one's past, I'd like to think that the endless "cellular environment" means people are "organic," not just in the carbon-form sense, but capable of change and transformation. And, yeah, wouldn't this require a little self-reflection (introspection? self-study?) and, perhaps, a little viewing of oneself from different angles and perspectives?
I found a couple of good quotes by a Sydney J. Harris (who is this guy?)....
"A cynic is not merely one who reads bitter lessons from the past, he is one who is prematurely disappointed in the future."
"Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable."
Another obliquely related thought: I'm considering laying mosaic tile down in my bathroom. Is this a bad idea? I'm also planning on installing some new Pergo flooring in the living room. Concord Oak or Butcher Block Beech?
