So my little girl is finishing her Sophomore year of high school. A mere 16 years old and before the year is out she takes a standardized test in her class. And she freakin CLEPed out of college biology! Still a freakin sophomore and she already has 3 hours of college credit completed and paid for and out of the way!
Yer damn right I am bragging! Sure, I told my high school gang and they said I needed to go ahead and have the DNA checked. I told MY parents and they said our old paperboy always was a smart kid. I ...I I was beginning to see a pattern here, so I actually confronted Mrs. Y2K and she made that sweet sad face you make to people you like, but take pity on, and said, "Awww baby, everybody knows it skips a generation."
Yeah well fuck you very much! All of you! Yeah, even you with the semi snicker starting on the corner of your mouth. I happen to know I and I alone am responsible for the great accomplishments of my daughter. It started years ago while she was still in elementary school. I knew she would soon surpass my ability to help and she would need other shoulders to lean on. Thus I encouraged the STUDY GROUP.
Yes the study group, a collection of girls about the same age in the same classes of near equal abilities. Some made perfect grades and never studied, some made near perfect grades and studied all the time. The were all bright, they were all cute and they were all friends. So slumber parties often included study sessions. After school phone time was checking homework and discussing assignments (as well as boys) and with each passing year the bond between the girls grew stronger.
At a 20 year class reunion one of my old eh... fishing buddies... was stammering on and on while talking to the old teacher Brydges-ass. He went on and on about how good it was to see him and how connected he felt and he could not describe all the feelings he was having. Bridges-ass was patient (probably stoned) as he patiently explained how in the formative years of our life people creep into our DNA. They become a part of who and what we are and will ever be. It was really deep dude. That's why I am pretty sure he was stoned.
So now, I see my daughter forming even tighter bonds with her girlfriends. They stand by each other, they support each other and they watch out for each other. If one of them is wronged the rest of them want to kick ass in revenge. They have been a solid group, a Girl's A team for five solid years. Braving school, boyfriends, dating, kissing, football, and "skank ho bitches" which are other girls in their class that they don't feel fondly towards.
But next year Y2Kette will go to a different educational track without her old posse. I have been concerned because it has been a hugely influential support group. With just two years of high school left I really hate to see the old gang break into fractions. High school is too freakin early to have to leave your friends behind to chase down a future. I know today is a much different world than the one I graduated from in 1980. While I went on my separate way in high school and lost touch with my little gang for years and years the same might not be true for her. When I was in school my rowdy friends and I called ourselves a gang and swore undying friendship. Before leaving for different colleges and different lives, sending the occasional Christmas card or child's graduation notice. I feel pretty sure this won't happen to Y2Kette though.
Except the other day she said goodnight to her friend Jaymee with a hug and pledge, "Ho's before Bro's!
I think I might need to limit her access to bad influences like THOSE kids.
