Dreams of a Hippie Farmer Wanna Be

Public Journal
Give me a piece of dirt that I can call my own. A place to call home. A place to hang my hat. A place where no one can tell me what to do.

A place for peace, happiness and a bit of craziness.

Backyard Update

OK here's what's up.  I know it won't look like much right now, but I'm hoping the change will really look nice next season.

It's hard to see so you might have to click the pic for a larger view.  Anyway, the mint is still in the front and center.  I moved some ailing plants to this location after I raked it out.  There are Mums, lilies and iris in the new location.  In the Fall I'll have a ton of pine straw falling in my yard so I will mulch it with them.

Here's those plants that are popping up.  Still don't know what they are.

They look pitiful but I think they will be OK.  They were watered heavily over the last two days and we got some rain last night.

This is where the butterfly bush was planted.  There really is a baby Maple in there.  It went into shock and dropped its leaves.  But, I'm sure it will be just fine.

That's about it for now.  How's your garden doing?

Growing Food On Your Dinner Table

This is amazing. I love this idea. It would be tough for me to do this with my furbabies running around and eating the plants. LOL

But the concept is wonderful. Now, almost anyone can grow fresh veggies.

The link to this document was posted on a forum and I just knew you guys would enjoy this.

Seems like growing food indoors in still uncharted territory. Why not be a pioneer?  I think it's awesome.

What do you think?

Click here to download and/or preview the .pdf document. Very, very cool

Here's a pic from the document. I love this idea.

Backyard Update

I hope you guys enjoyed the last couple of posts I made.  I just thought those goodies were worth sharing.  I'll post more as I discover them.

Anyway, here's what's up in my back yard.  My oak tree died.  This is the baby oak I planted after the red buds died.  I am convinced there is something very toxic in that part of my yard.  No matter what is planted it dies and dies quickly.  Very strange.

Here we go.  Come join me amongst the plants and trees.  Bring a chair and I'll make some Sun Tea.

These plants are popping up all over.  I'm letting them grow just to see what they are.

I know I don't have many pics but that's how it is sometimes. I'll be taking many more pics when I'm on vacation.  Maybe a video tour.  That's a week  off so until then, this will have to do.

Have a great day, my friends

Farming on 2 acres

Most of you know I read the Tiny House Blog and I love it. But, look what I found. It's called The Tiny Farm Blog. How cool is that? It's all about farming on 2 acres. It's a wonderful blog and I know I can learn alot from it. I have both 'tiny' blogs listed in the right hand side bar under Favorite Sites.

I just thought you guys would like this blog.

Full of pictures and tons of information. It's really great stuff. I sure wish I could do that right now. But, I have to have patience and then I might not have 2 acres but I can still do this in a community farm effort. Maybe that's something I can start once I move. Could be fun.

Here's a pic from the blog just to give you an idea.

Click here to check out Tiny Farm Blog. Really good stuff!!!!!

Happy Fourth In The Garden

Since my vacation is a couple weeks away I've been looking around for things to change.  I am going to clean up the area between the jasmine and the magnolia tree.  I'll move the mums more center and leave the mint.  It won't be quite as messy but I'll let the plants do what they want.

The side garden plants (I don't photo them very often) aren't doing well due to hardly any sun and too much water when it rains.  So, I'm going to pull them all out and pull out the edging and just leave it that way.  It will be fine.  But, here's how things looked like over the holiday weekend.

Oh, one more thing.  The banana tree will be lost.  It's just not doing well and I don't have any place in the back with enough sun to really allow it to grow as quickly as it needs to.

My poor butterfly bush.  I don't know what happened.
Something ate it up in the past week.  :-(

More of the Same

Well, until I get some time off and some energy things are pretty much looking the same.  Trees are growing and flowers blooming.  I need to clean it up a bit but still leave it wild.

Oh, I saw a cat in the back yard and it looked like she was nursing.  It was so fast, I'm not sure. I looked all around to see if I could find a den with babies.  I didn't see anything.  Then I remained very still in hopes I would hear something.  Still nothing.  I am keeping a look out to see if I see her again.

In the meantime, here's how things are looking.  How's your garden doing these days?

Summer's Beginning

Well, here's how things are looking as summer begins.  It's really kind of messy but it's fun because you never know what you might find.  Sad thing is that there's been so much building and stuff that the few critters that were around seem to have moved on.

Outside my window, at work, I see deer and some really big bunnies.  There's a bit of woods back there and the animals are always wandering around very close to our building.  I worry about them and just hope no one hurts them and respects their wildness.

On to the the weekly pics.  Here we go.

Banana Tree

I really have to find out what kind of tree this is.

Jasmine spreading

This is another tree I have to find out the name of.  It was in the group of 10 flowering trees I got from the Arbor Day Foundation.

This one came from the Arbor Day Foundation as well.

The Jasmine Ball is so out of control.  I love it.

Below are some pics from the side of my house in the back yard.  Not really part of the wildness but it's still pretty
