THEATERGOER: 'Defending the Caveman'

We got the chance to check out 'Defending the Caveman' recently at the Rosslyn Spectrum starring Kevin Burke, and laughed despite ourselves, really. True, the subject material is reminiscent of the slob-with-a-hot-wife sitcoms like 'King of Queens' or 'According to Jim' (which we DON'T watch... often), but Rob Becker's one-man show, an ancestor of that slowly evolving Neanderthal joke, is spun around a guy trying to answer a woman's question, why are men such jerks? (PG version)

Kevin Burke's physical comedy and rapport with the audience make this show. It is a show with one man, so that one guy has to be fun to watch. Like Aristotle thought, comedy must've started with the phallic procession because the chasm between the sexes -- and its consequences -- is truly funny. You will in laugh in recognition of the contrast between sometimes mystifying male and female behavior.

The show has been extended until April 30. The audience is all couples, so it's a good show to take mom and dad to, or get tickets for someone's anniversary. The next show at the Spectrum heralds the return of
Synetic Theater, which was nominated for a Helen Hayes last year. They'll open with 'Jason and the Argonauts' on May 13.
