Hearing The Faint's new LP 'Wet From Birth' (ewww)

Interpol -- Antics ~ 8.0

Of all the CDs coming out in 2004 -- Ashlee Simpson! Ryan Cabrera! -- Interpol's sophomore effort is the one I've been most excited about. I was all jazz hands when this leaked my way a few weeks prior to release (9/28) and I'm glad to hear that the key components to their distinct sound are all in place: too-cool-for-goth-school vocals, guitars played by knives and ambiguous art-house lyrics.

Be that as it may, the best moments on Antics don't quite measure up to their brilliant debut album. Great songs are still to be had though -- the magnificent mid-tempo album opener 'Next Exit' ("We ain't goin' to the tooooooown, we goin' to the city"), the bass-driven 'Evil' and lead single 'Slow Hands' -- and I'm sure this disc will grow on me just like their last one did.

I'm hoping to see them 11/9 at the 9:30 Club in D.C., and they're probably coming to your town too (check it out and buy tix). Until then, hear new cuts from Antics on the Interpol site and old ones -- 'Specialist' (from the O.C.!) and 'NYC' -- at AOL Keyword: Interpol.

My 5 Fave Albums of the 21st Century (so far)
1. The Strokes -- Is This It?
2. The Flaming Lips -- Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
3. Interpol -- Turn on the Bright Lights
4. The Streets -- Original Pirate Material
5. Wilco -- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Honorable mentions: The White Stripes, Spoon, The Shins, Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie, The Faint, Radiohead, Fugazi, Ted Leo, The Hives, Coldplay, Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket, The Postal Service, Sondre Lerche...

    Ok.

I'll see your five, and I'll raise you five.

1.) Modest Mouse -- The Moon and Antarctica (2000)
2.) The Postal Service -- Give Up (2003)
3.) Interpol -- Turn On the Bright Lights (2003)
    4.) Spoon -- Kill the Moonlight (2002)
    5.) Outkast -- Stankonia (2002)

EXTREMELY close runners up, which made the competition EXTREMELY DIFFICULT:
The Shins -- Oh, Inverted World (2001)
Deathcab for Cutie -- The Photo Album (2001)
Clem Snide -- The Ghost of Fashion (2001)
Wilco -- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2003)

I would throw in a few to my top 5 that you are not including as well homie.  Not to mention a need to remind cmottram that it really is the "Danse Macabre, Remixes" that deserve the Top 5 slot.  Where are the White Stripes, I agree, but let me add that Radiohead "Amnesiac" has a well earned Numero 1 spot on my list, and bump that My Morning Jacket up a few notches for gods sakes!!!!!!  Jim James crooning does funny things to the ladies!!!!!!  So my top 5 goes something like this.

    Radiohead "Amnesiac"
    Cursive  "The Ugly Organ"
The White Stripes "White Blood Cells"
My Morning Jacket "It Still Moves"
    The Faint "Danse Macabre, Remixes"

I did not include "Chutes too Narrow"  as I think that The Shins are deserving of their own all time list, and should not be included in the above.  Helloooooo......

Your list is to be admired, however, it is not totally accurate.  Any one of the White Stripes four albums should be there in place of The Streets album.  Dont get me wrong, Pirate Material is money, but not top 5 money.  Faint "Danse Macabre" (Thats off the top of my head, i hope i spelled it right) is easily in the top 3 in my book.  Furthermore, Spoon has to be in there in place of Wilco, thats not even close.  This is difficult to do without my CDs in front of me, but I think I would have to pull the Strokes off too.  Its a fantastic album, but I'm not sure its top5; top 10 for sure though.  From your list I would leave Interpol without a doubt.  Finally, I think the Flaming Lips needs to be replaced with the shins.  Ok thats it, im finished.
