Hearing Hail to the Redskins
ElectArtMonk.com Manifesto
I was child of the '80s. More specifically, I was a child of the Washington, DC area in the '80s. Meaning, for at least 16 weeks a year I worship at the church of Gibbs. That's what happens when your team wins three (and goes to four) Super Bowls when you're between the ages of six and 14. It was on those great Redskins teams of the '80s (and '91) that my favorite player starred at wide receiver for the Burgundy & Gold: #81 in your program but #1 in my heart... Art Monk.
Under my watch, Monk broke the mark for most catches in a season (106 in '84). He shattered the record for most catches in a career (passing Steve Largent in '92). He set the standard for most consecutive games with a catch (164 straight). The man won three Super Bowls and went to three Pro Bowls. It's rumored that he never dropped a pass, and it's fact that he played with dignity and class.
It was Monk's face that was staring at me when I opened my first pack of football cards ('86 Topps 1,000-Yard Club insert). It was Monk's #81 that adorned my first and all-time favorite 'Skins jersey. It was Monk's catalog of cards that I yearned to complete (even the police cards from '82-'84 but not the Jets and Eagles cards because Monk never played in NY and Philly, no he didn't). It was Monk who, on the team's 50th anniversary in '86, was named by Washington fans as their all-time favorite Redskin.
While similar (or perhaps lesser) wide receivers such as James Lofton, Charlie Joiner, Lynn Swann and John Stallworth reside in the cozy confines of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, it's Monk who has been shut out by the selection committee every year since becoming eligible in '01. It's time to right a wrong. As a Redskins fan, as a football fan, I implore you to support ElectArtMonk.com and it's mission to get #81 into the place he so rightfully deserves.
