'04 Brady vs. '83 Montana
Maybe I'm still groggy from being at last night's 'Skins-Eagles game and not getting home 'til 2AM, but Brady is the new Montana. I know, Montana's the best ever, and Brady's just a kid w/ 3 full seasons under his hipster belt, but after another Montana-esque performance yesterday -- including an unreal completion from the seat of his pants (watch the highlight if you haven't) -- the Brady of 2004 just might have something on the Montana of 1983.
At this point in their respective careers, both are unquestionable greats in the making. Each is in his 5th year, 27 years old and accelerating into his prime. Each was a relatively low draft pick who sat his rookie season. Each has a Super Bowl ring, and Brady has one for the other hand too (although Joe went on to win four). Both complete more than 60% of their passes and throw almost twice as many TDs as INTs; and not just on regular Sundays but on the frozen tightrope of January football.
Beyond the numbers, Brady and Montana both ooze grace, poise and crossover appeal. They're cursed w/ good looks and fine women (see: Bridget Moynahan, see also: Jennifer Montana). These vague attributes that earn Brady the #1 spot on my All-Envy Team are best explained by personal fave Fred Smoot who, when naming the NFL's best QB, said, "Tom Brady so smooth he drop back and just make love to the pocket."
Well said, Smoot. Ironically enough, Brady's '04 pace is a near-perfect reflection of Montana's '83 numbers -- about 3,800 yards, 26 TDs and 11 INTs. Whether the Pats win their 3rd Super Bowl in 4 years or not, young Brady still has a long way to catch up w/ the great Montana. But for all intents and purposes, '04 Brady is every bit as good as '83 Montana.
* This entry originally appeared earlier today in my other Journal -- Pigskin Bloggers. And, yes, I have had a fascination recently w/ comparing modern players (Pedro, Manning, LeBron and now Brady) w/ guys from yesteryear (Koufax, Marino, Jordan and Montana).

BTW Montana never made ANY interceptions on all of his superbowl appearances.

He will never be Montana or be like Montana. I'm not a 49er fan but I do know that Montana has taken the KC Chiefs and beaten his own team with the Chiefs. That's how good he was. I'm still curious as to see how Brady will do without Charlie Weis. Brady is a great quarterback but to be compared to JM despite one superbowl away is a little off. Maybe you can compare him to Aikman.

There are times (actually many) when I'm watching the gifted Brady, that he reminds me of the greatest QB of ALL TIME - Joe Montana. Brady will win his 3rd Super Bowl this year and probably will win a few more before it's all said and done. There have been many great QB's over the years, but none possessing the complete package of a "cool under pressure" Montana. Since Montana was the QB of the 80's, Brady will certainly be the QB of the 00's! Sorry to those folks who think the Culpepper's, McNabb's, Vick's, Manning's and anyone else out there could ever fill these shoes. No one comes close to Joe Montana than Tom Brady.
