Not to Name Names, but...
Since my last post when I asked for dirt on the rampant 'roid rumors, I've received some good emails, comments and such, but nothing anywhere near concrete. On tonight's SBL, we'll ask ESPN's Buster Olney to give us the scoop, but I'm pretty sure he either won't want or be able to add fuel to a fire with no discernable starting point.
B'anyway, here's some stuff I've found since Friday:
· The Baltimore Sun wrote: "Internet fertile ground for rumors on steroids;" which included this snippet: "Pat Courtney, an MLB spokesman who fielded 50 to 60 calls from reporters about the rumor, insisted yesterday, "It is 100 percent not true."
· Kevin Kennedy said on FOX's pregame show Saturday that he's spoken to Johnny Damon personally and said Damon vehemently denies all rumors that he has tested positive. He also took rumor mongers to task for not naming their source (if they have one).
· Boston Herald quoted Damon saying of Palmeiro, "We just can't believe he did something like that. It goes to show how much it's overtaken the game and how much it's probably helped a whole lot of players to stay on the field and be able to keep playing and hit all of those home runs, and have all of that extra confidence.''
· Apparently, Michael Kay made a mysterious reference on his ESPN Radio show to two players testing positive. One of whom is a bigger name than Palmeiro and would "bring baseball to his knees" if it were announced that he tested positive and another who is a very good player that may receive Hall of Fame consideration after his retirement. (Thanks to Quick Slants and George Coztanza for filling me in there.)
· In separate ESPN chats, Rob Neyer and Gary Miller acknowledged thatthey had heard rumors ("along with some actual names") but declined to comment.
· Moving off of 'roids and onto the future, Peter Gammons who will be the 20 best players five years from now. It's a fun read for seamheads like me. The top five are: 1) Rickie Weeks 2) Conor Jackson 3) Jeff Francouer 4) Huston Street 5) Zach Duke. We'll be talking about some of these guys (and Felix Hernandez the phenom) with Gammons' old friend David Pinto from Baseball Musings on tonight's SBL.
· Just because I'm in a fantasy football league with hosts of 10 different sports podcasts does NOT mean I'm a tech dork. And thanks to Sean from Box Score Radio for putting it together.
· Deron Williams has a blog on Real GM.
· Sportz' Preseason Top 12 (includes Michigan at 2 and Ohio St. at 3 -- both of which we'll cover on SBL's Big 10 preview Thursday)
· Coztanza says, "Shorten the preseason."
· The 'Pova is not happy about becoming an even taller drink of water.
· Did You See That pic of the week:
Pats 1st-Rounder Logan Mankins
· Did You See That pic of the week runner-up:
Weird!
