Fanblogs XIV: Week 9 Votes

Here are my votes in this week's Fanblogs XIV Poll. Pay a visit to Fanblogs for interesting stories and fan commentary, and check out AOL College Football for scores, news and more.

MOTTRAM'S WEEK 9 VOTES & NOTES

1. USC (1) -- Typical USC: Losing 10-7 at Washington only to go on 44-14 run. Next challenge is at Cal on 11/12.
2. Texas (2) -- Red Raiders messed with the bull and got the 'Horns.
3. Virginia Tech (3) -- Hokies displayed their affection for Thursday night games by whooping Maryland at College Park, and this week they get BC in Blacksburg.
4. Georgia (4) -- Can a guy named Joe Tereshinski III possibly win the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party?
5. Alabama (7) -- At some point, a fan must realize that the cosmic tumblers have fallen into place for a team. 'Bama's win over the Vols was that point for this fan.
6. Miami (5) -- Saturday's UNC game is a warmup for next week's trip to Blacksburg.
7. Notre Dame (6) -- Brady Quinn is on pace for 4,032 yards and 34 TD.
8. LSU (8) -- With wins over Arizona St., Florida and now Auburn, if not for that collapse against Tennessee it would be hard to keep them out of the top-three. But they did blow a 17-point fourth-quarter lead.
9. UCLA (9) -- The unbeaten that gets no respect. Improbably, they could be playing for the Rose Bowl berth at USC on 12/3.
10. Penn State (11) -- Purdue and Wisconsin at home before a trip to Michigan St. to close out the regular season. 10-1 and a Big Ten Championship would be fitting.
11. Florida State (10) -- That loss to UVA looks worse now that UVA just lost to UNC.
12. Ohio State (12) -- Visit a rested and angry Minnesota team Saturday.
13. Oregon (13) -- Lose QB Clemens but hold on at Arizona. Playing Cal this week is bad news (Golden) Bears.
14. Wisconsin (nr) -- Only loss came at Northwestern. Only remaining loss may come in Happy Valley on 11/5.

The Next Five -- Wisconsin, Florida, Auburn, Northwestern, Boston College

Finally, last week's best comment comes from Mister Irrelevant reader al1tdr:

"You may feel smart about keeping one of the most well balanced offenses and one of the top defenses in the nation out of your Top 5, but you just look dumb. BAMA had a close call on the road with an SEC team in a classic sandwich game (between Florida and tennessee).......so what? USC has had a couple of less than stellar performances against patsies as well. It happens. These scrub teams get up for the ranked teams while the ranked teams have to muster a lot of shear character just to get by them. All will be forgiven when the Tide beats ut this weekend and then a Top 10 LSU team. Then when BAMA beats a ranked Auburn team and another Top 5 team, UGA, you'll see the Tide jump up to second place in the BCS. Texas is playing in the Big 12 during a down year for that conference. A lackluster conference championship game for them won't be enough to stave off a rising Tide who will have beaten four Top 5 teams and two other ranked teams this season. I'm glad you have BAMA as low as you do.......it helps us stay under the radar for a few more weeks. BAMA is sitting a lot prettier than almost every national sportscaster believes. What else is new. They are rarely right about anything important."

If Virginia Tech wins out over Miami, Virginia, North Carolina, and predictably Florida State, they will have played the toughest schedule in the nation. A big if, but they would then deserve playing against Texas for the National Championship. UCLA will upend the Trojans. Need I say more? Let's get it right for once and have the two strongest teams play without always looking for the big market!

Wisconsin isn't that strong of a team.  2nd half comebacks help save many top-ranked teams.

WHY DONT YOU GIVE WEST VIRGINIA SOME CREDIT,  THEY ARE A VERY YOUNG TEAM AND WERE SUPPOSED TO FINISH NO BETTER THAN 3RD IN THE BIG EAST AND YET HERE THEY ARE AGAIN IN THE RUNNING FOR THE FOURTH STRAIGHT TIME OUT OF FIVE YRS UNDER COACH RODRIGUEZ. 6-1 OVERALL, 3-0 CONF. AND LOOKING AT GOING TO THE BCS SUGAR BOWL.

Yeah, look for Texas to fall.  Texas has nobody significant left on their schedule, except for the 'theoretically' dangerous trap game at A&M at the end of the regular season.  When they roll onto the conference championship game they will likely face either Colorado or Missouri, two Big XII North teams they have already dismantled this year.

USC on the other hand, faces three ranked teams in their final five games, including a season finale against unbeaten, #6 UCLA.  One has to imagine this historically small (.0007 point) difference in the BCS point total will easily disappear.

Additionally, if VT (who still plays #14 BC, #7 Miami and possibly #10 FSU in the championship game), Alabama (#8 LSU, #22 Auburn, and possibly #4 Georgia) or Georgia (#19 Florida, #22 Auburn, and possibly #5 Alabama) manages to win out, then ESPN's dream BCS matchup of Texas-USC may be in jeopardy altogether, much to the delight of Tommy Tuberville: http://www.fanblogs.com/auburn/005998.php
