Detroit Sports Blog: 'Thank This!'

The Lions embarrassing 27-7 loss on Thanksgiving Day was not so much about the reemergence of the Falcons as NFC contenders as it was about the continued agony that is being a Detroit football fan. The Motor City has not seen an 11-win season or even the second round of the playoffs since '91.* That's a near-Cincinnati level of ineptitude.

So when guys like Frank over at Detroit Sports Blog fly off the handle, it's best just to let them finish. Here's what he had to say after the loss (in italics with my commentary interspersed throughout). Keep in mind that he predicted a 35-13 before the game:

"This is becoming so pathetic, it's like watching a Mac Conference team play against a Big Ten team. The Lions are so far below sub-par its sad. It's amazing they have been able to win 4 games."

I concur.

"Steve Mariucci flat out sucks as a coach. WHY did he bench Harrington in the first half? Did he put Garcia in to boost the offense? Well that didn't work. I mean you can't blame Harrington for the interception his receiver fell. You wanna blame him for Bryson fumbling??  I mean what did he do?"

The same questions were asked in the Mottram household as well.

"Garcia was just flat out pathetic, when he threw that lame duck in the air he was so fortunate they called holding, because who the hell was he throwing to?"

Aside from family, food and beverages, this pass/punt was the highlight of my Thanksgiving.

"I say give Orlovski the ball, what do you have to lose? Heck he could be a diamond in the rough. Who knows."

We'd never even heard of this guy. Upon further review, Dan Orlovsky is a 22 year-old, 6'5", 225-lb. 5th-round QB from UConn. Sure, give him the damn ball.

 Mooch is d-u-n-n Dunn.

"It would be a miracle if this team wins another game under Mariucci. I say fire him now and let Dick Jauron run the offense, Mooch just isn't getting it done."

Detroit Free Press is reporting that Detroit Sports Blog may get his wish. I guess that's what happens when a coach gets a $5 million/year contract and proceeds to go 15-28. Reminds me an awful lot of the Steve Spurrier-era in DC.

"This Lions team is pathetic. Thankful for them? I don't think so. Thank this!"

Which leads me to my last point: Detroit should be removed from the Thanksgiving lineup. I understand it's tradition that Dallas and Detroit play on Turkey Day, but it's almost unbearable from a neutral observer (and completely unbearable for a Lions fan, apparently) to watch Motor City professional football. Mr. Tagliabue, please stop the suffering. Much like the pilgrims before you, this is your chance to make it right by inviting native Americans to the table. Bring on the Washington Redskins!

Update: Head over to Pigskin Bloggers for more Thanksgiving football blogging.

* Good God the Lions only have two 11-win seasons in 75 years of playing professional football! Now the NFL only went to 16-game seasons in '78 (thank God), but that's still amazing.

Lions are the best team in the NFL, As far as I m concerned, we have great fans, really the whole city of Detroit

will say that. In Detroit if you want to watch the Lions in style good luck with that, all the Lions premium seats

get sold out the day they show up in ticketmaster. Lions tickets are sometimes 2 or even 5 times the face value.

Anyhow If you get lost I have a new sight for u guys

so much hype at the start of the season for a bunch of guys who call themselves professionals.  only a few are earning their paychecks, the rest seem to be coasting.  whatever happend to playing for personal pride or maybe that stops once you get paid.  all i know is the players should take a good hard look at themselves and i dont think most of them could say that they give 100 percent on the field but they sure do collect that paycheck.  maybe we can trade the enitre team for the new orleans saints.  i m sick and tired of getting fired up every year about this team.   i m sure i ll never see a super bowl winner here in my lifetime.

A buddy of mine, a former high school football coach, accurately predicted +90% of every Lion's offensive play yesterday.  He said the entire league knows what Mooch will call for an offensive play before he does.  He is that predictable!  Give it up man, let an unknown call some plays.   And dump Joey and Jeff before they take you down.  Try something fresh like the new guy to keep us interested before the entire stadium is empty on game day.  Certainly cannot be any worse.

    Vicious Circle:

Detroit has sucked for a long time, but they sort of merit Thanksgiving games due to their history.

The TV networks have more trouble selling Detroit vs New Orleans than if the Lions are laid out on a plate for Michael Vick, Brett Favre, or whatever team is hot (read:good) at the moment. So we get to see Detroit get lit up every year.

In the WWE, this is known as "jobbing."

I can see Indy whaling on them next year.
