'Shrine Sites': Free Darko and Get Buckets Brigade
The folks at Cold Pizza have me on now and again to represent sports bloggers everywhere, which I suppose makes sense when you consider I host a show called Sports Bloggers Live. Anyway, we're working on the blog segment becoming a reoccurring thing and they've asked me to come up with my favorite "shrine sites" that are floating in the blogosphere. So here's what I provided for their consideration:
Free Darko!
This highly entertaining, verbose, and dare I say visionary site is a group effort dedicated to Darko Milicic's eternal quest for salvation and more playing time (up to 9 mpg!). They have a Free Darko petition and Free Darko tees and were even featured on Fox Sports. To quote the Fox piece:
"FS: What exactly are you freeing Darko from?
FD: Solitude. Adversity. The burden of history. The endless mockery of a thousand under-informed miscreants. Chad Ford's watchful gaze. Sure, we'd like to see him freed in a basketball sense, for the good of the league. But there's also a spiritual, almost political, dimension to our mission."
I can't recommend this site highly enough. And the t-shirts make a nice holiday gift.
Get Buckets Brigade!
Much like Free Darko is dedicated to getting Darko into the rotation, the Get Buckets Brigade ("One Man, One Motto") is all about voting Boston's Ricky Davis onto the All-Star Team. At first glance, it seems odd for someone to create and maintain a site of devotion to a player who once shot on his own hoop to grab the 10th rebound of his first-ever triple double.
However, when you think about it, what's not to like about Ricky Davis? He's agreat dunker, has interesting hair andis one of only a few guys in the NBA averaging 20 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds per game. So yes, young Ricky, go Get Buckets and good luck on making the your first All-Star Game.
